Bedford announces first international school

Bedford School has become the latest independent school to venture into the international schools market, announcing that it will open a school in Mohali, northern India, in April 2026.

Bedford School Mohali will be located on the outskirts of Chandigarh, and - notably, given that the school in the UK is all boys - will be an all-girls’ school, open to those aged 4 to 18.

Bedford said the new school will offer both the national and British curricula, with day and boarding options available, and claims it will be the first British international all-girls’ school in India.

The school is being opened in partnership with Doon International Education Society, a charity established in 1993 that already runs four schools in the country.

A family of international schools

James Hodgson, head master of Bedford School, said there had been “two years of work behind the scenes” to get to this stage - and suggested more school openings could be on the horizon.

“We see this school as the start of a growing family of schools, each of which will support and enhance one another in a global marketplace,” he said.

Mr Hodgson added that there would be opportunities of collaboration between the school in the UK and its new Indian outpost.

“We are fully committed to providing a world-class education here in Bedford - but also an education which equips our boys fully for the world at large. The opportunities such a family opens up are not insignificant and will benefit us all,” he said,

The announcement underlines the huge boom in international schools in India, which is on course toovertake China as the most popular country for international schools.
