The Great Kapok Tree - The Beginning!
This engaging and thought-provoking lesson is the first in a series of three lessons designed to accompany the class reading of Lynne Cherry’s 'The Kapok Tree.’ This lesson covers the opening section of the text (up to the end of the bee page - ‘all living things depend on one another.’)
The comprehensive and colourful PowerPoint presentation enables students to understand the text through:
-Making predictions;
-Understanding the key features of context;
-Retrieving key information.
The lesson includes key information about the author, Amazon rainforest and deforestation, in addition to a range of retrieval, vocabulary, inference and deeper thinking activities. The PowerPoint presentation (16 slides) guides students through each stage of the learning. For the deeper thinking research task, a worksheet/ template is provided to guide the children’s thinking (in both Word and PDF).
There is a lot of content here, so I would suggest perhaps breaking this up over two lessons. The resources are most suitable for students in lower KS2 (I originally used these resources with a year 3 class), but may be adapted for other age groups, depending upon the individual context of the school and students.

This resource booklet contains a wide range of age-appropriate, engaging, and meaningful comprehension activities for use throughout the reading of Morris Gleitzman’s 'Once.’ Teachers have found them particularly useful in comprehension or guided reading sessions. They are perfect for aiding the progress of children towards meeting the KS2 expectations within the National Curriculum framework. Children love learning from these resources, whilst they are also of great use to teachers, as there is explicit information within each task regarding which comprehension strands the task is designed to demonstrate. They also relate to key extracts, characters, and themes from the story, ensuring that children gain a deep understanding of the text.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas - Chapters 19-20 - Double Lesson!
This engaging and thought-provoking double-lesson resource aids students in developing a secure understanding of Chapters Nineteen and Twenty of John Boyne’s 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.’ In this final section of the text, Bruno enters the camp disguised as a prisoner in order to help Shmuel find his father, he and Shmuel become victims of the horrors of the Holocaust, and Bruno’s family are heartbroken at his disappearance.

This engaging and thought-provoking double-lesson resource aids students in developing a secure understanding of Chapters Fifteen and Sixteen of John Boyne’s 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.’ In this section of the text, Bruno denies knowing Shmuel to Lieutenant Kotler and the family temporarily return to Berlin after Grandmother passes away.
The comprehensive and colourful PowerPoint presentation enables students to understand the text through:
