Students examine continuity and change in the ideas about the treatment and prevention of illness and disease in Renaissance England, c.1500-c.1700. UPDATED & RE-VAMPED CONTENT IN LINE WITH THE 2026 SPEC The 24 slide fully resourced lesson contains activities, tasks, practice exam questions, printable resources and all background knowledge: Slide 1: Title slide Slide 2: Warm Up - Finish and discuss a well known saying Slide 3-5: Recap - Students complete a missing word activity covering the treatments used throughout the Medieval period. Answers and printable resource included. Slide 6: Starter Source 1 - A visual source showing the use of antimony for purging. Prompt questions given to help students with the source. Slide 7: Starter Source 2 - A written source covering the continued use of herbal remedies. Prompt questions provided. Slide 8: Background information about the influence of the monarchy on new forms of treatment in the time. Slide 9: Background information covering the continued use of herbal remedies in the Renaissance. Slide 10-11: Task 1 - A printable worksheet which encourages students to outline how the treatments of the time were examples of continuity or change. Students then evaluate how far ideas about treatments changed in the period. Slide 12: Task 2 - An additional, printable worksheet linked to the fact sheets which focus more on explanation. Students explain the factors which led to the development in new ideas about the cause of illness and disease in Renaissance England including a focus on the role of Charles II, the Royal Society, technology such as the printing press and microscope, the role of scientists and decrease in religious influences. UPDATED & RE-VAMPED CONTENT IN LINE WITH THE 2026 SPEC The 27 slide fully resourced lesson contains activities, tasks, practice exam questions, printable resources and all background knowledge: Slide 1: Title slide Slide 2: Lesson Warm Up - How do factors like religion, technology, monarchy and war etc impact our lives today? Slide 3-4: Recap - Students are given 8 statements about how medical understanding of the cause of illness improved after c.1500 and have to fill in the before and after gaps. Answers provided. Slide 5: Starter - Students given a basic image of a microscope and have to infer from the image alone what is is and how it would have helped progress medicine. Slide 6-7: Background information covering the roles of Robert Hooke and Leeuwenhoek’s development in the microscope. Slide 8-9: Task 1 - Students provided with a diagram to help them make notes about the factors which led to progress in ideas about illness and disease. Includes a printable resource. Slide 10-12: Task 2 - Students go on to explain the factors using the P.E.E. structure. Two alternative printable worksheets provided. Slide 13-14: Task 3 - Students evaluate how important each of the 10 factors are by shading in medicine bottles.
