

Students explain the factors which led to the development in new ideas about the cause of illness and disease in Renaissance England including a focus on the role of Charles II, the Royal Society, technology such as the printing press and microscope, the role of scientists and decrease in religious influences.

- Slide 1: Title slide
- Slide 2: Lesson Warm Up - How do factors like religion, technology, monarchy and war etc impact our lives today?
- Slide 3-4: Recap - Students are given 8 statements about how medical understanding of the cause of illness improved after c.1500 and have to fill in the before and after gaps. Answers provided.
- Slide 5: Starter - Students given a basic image of a microscope and have to infer from the image alone what is is and how it would have helped progress medicine.
- Slide 6-7: Background information covering the roles of Robert Hooke and Leeuwenhoek’s development in the microscope.
- Slide 8-9: Task 1 - Students provided with a diagram to help them make notes about the factors which led to progress in ideas about illness and disease. Includes a printable resource.
- Slide 10-12: Task 2 - Students go on to explain the factors using the P.E.E. structure. Two alternative printable worksheets provided.
- Slide 13-14: Task 3 - Students evaluate how important each of the 10 factors are by shading in medicine bottles. This is done on a printable worksheet which comes with space for students to explain their opinions.
- Slide 15: Task 4 - Students encouraged to explain how the factors link to each other - an example is provided.
- Slide 16: Learning Review 1 - A recap of the role played by 6 key individuals.
- Slide 17-19: Learning Review 2 - A match up activity for students to recap their knowledge of 8 key terms from the lesson.
