Edmond Holmes, a respected chief HMI in the early 20th century, once described the problems of education as “obscure, subtle and elusive”. He said he was someone who knows “enough about education to realise how little is or can be known about it”. What a contrast to Sir Michael Wilshaw. Will his diatribe, I wonder, be quoted in 10 years, let alone a century? I doubt it.
