A 16-year-old pupil who scored Rochdale’s equaliser in a match against Manchester United this week has said he will be back in school for an extra day to make up for his day off playing football.

Luke Matheson, who is 16, attends Trinity High School, in Manchester, but also plays as a defender for the League One side (pictured).

His equalising goal took the match to a draw, which Manchester United then won 5-3 on a penalty shoot-out.

Mr Mathieson told the BBC that he would be going into school on the day after the Carabao Cup match as he is studying for A-levels and had a psychology test.

He told the BBCafter the match: “I would have been at school today. I am going in tomorrow to make up for it when we have a day off as I have a psychology test. I can't wait for that. I don't think I will sleep tonight.

"Rochdale and the school have been so supportive of me. I love learning; it is what I want to do.

"Football is not a guarantee. You never know what will happen. You could be the best player in the world but anything is possible. I want to have that back-up plan just in case.”
