An extremely useful set of KS3 starters on Probability and Handling Data. Topics covered include: basic probability, probability of an event, mean, median, mode and range, averages from a table and Pictograms. These are excellent to begin a lesson with or to check prior knowledge of a topic or as plenaries.

A handy set of starters to do with topics involved in KS3 Geometry: angles, volume of 3-D shapes, constructing angles, transformations, properties of shapes and angle laws. These are excellent to start a lesson off, as ‘settlers’ to get students on task and also to test prior knowledge of a topic.

In this highly interactive group task students are encouraged to move around the classroom to find a fellow student who can tell them the definition of one of the 16 words on their worksheet which all relate to the KS3 Maths syllabus (mode, equation, perimeter etc.). This task encourages mathematical discussion and for pupils to become familiar with terminology used on the course as well as promoting literacy and cross-curricular links. This could be used as a starter activity in the lesson to engage pupils or as part of a stand-alone revision lesson reinforcing pupils’ knowledge of key words used throughout KS3 Maths.

A Powerpoint for KS3 Maths pupils covering a full lesson or lessons on scatter graphs and correlation. Types of correlation (positive and negative), drawing scattergraphs and plotting and interpreting lines of best fit are all included within this resource as well as questions and extension activities. Could be used as a whole lesson to teach the topic to pupils or as a revision activity.

A set of sample learning objectives for teaching a Year 10 GCSE Maths class about Surface Area of 2-D Shapes (drawing and interpreting). Differentiated objectives/outcomes are shown for the topic, literacy links, real world applications of the topic are displayed so that pupils can see the relevance of what they are learning as well as homework, merits and lesson questions pupils should be able to answer. This is an easily adaptable resource which can be changed and formatted to display any topic in the KS3 and GCSE Maths curriculum.

A useful resource for student Maths Teachers to self-assess and audit their subject knowledge of all topics in the curriculum. Topics are categorised by area and learner specification, with trainees able to easily use this resource to determine their own subject and pedagogical knowledge, whilst tracking the actions they’ve taken to improve their knowledge and when they’ve taught certain topics to pupils. This is also a really useful document for students to use as evidence to prove they are meeting the standards required to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)…

This resource contains a set of extension questions for GCSE Foundation Maths (which are grouped by topic) which are good at stretching pupils (especially more able students) and summatively assessing their knowledge of topics. The questions progress in difficulty and encourage pupils to think deeper and reflectively about what they’ve learned including evaluating, conjecturing, considering special cases and explaining/justifying. This resource would also work well as a plenary activity or to be set as homework.

This resource contains a set of questions and revision notes for pupils on acceleration and velocity-time graphs in GCSE Maths (Mechanics). Pupils are provided with worked examples and formulae to calculate the acceleration and displacement from a velocity-time graph before attempting a set of questions themselves. This resources builds strong cross-curricular links with literacy and developing pupils’ knowledge of mathematical notation and formulae.

This is an incredibly useful resource for students of a glossary of all the key words and terminology used in exam questions in KS3 and GCSE Maths. This is excellent for improving students’ exam technique, as a revision aid and developing their literacy skills. A definition is provided for each key word alongside a worked clear example. In my practice I gave this to pupils as a handout and it was very helpful for revision purposes and greatly improved their exam technique.

This resource contains a powerpoint of revision materials (key info and questions) for KS3 Maths Algebra topics. It could be used as a baseline to check students’ prior knowledge, as a starter or plenary activity and for a revision session to improve students’ exam technique. Topics covered include writing equations and formulae, simplifying expressions, expanding brackets and solving linear equations.

This useful powerpoint on calculating the circumference of a circle and arc length of a sector in KS3/4 Maths contains enough material for a couple of whole lessons. It’s interactive and instructs pupils on identifying parts of a circle, calculating the circumference of a circle and arc length and how to solve worded problems on these topics. Questions and model examples are provided and material is differentiated by level with strong cross-curricular links to literacy (using mathematical notation and fluency, worded problems).

A teaching sheet on ratio which defines what ratio is and provides worked examples of cancelling down ratios, representing them in the form 1:n and n:1 and answering questions which require the student to share a quantity (money, number of sweets etc.) between people in a given ratio. This teaching sheet is very accessible and presented in a simple, consistent easy-to-understand manner. Methods to answer each question are structured very clearly and are explained. It could be used to introduce a topic of ratios or provide worked examples to assist students in tackling questions on the topic. It will be of general use to students in Years 8-10 but may also assist Year 11 students who are aiming for a grade 5 in Mathematics.

A handy glossary of terms (separated by each of the 4 strands of Mathematics: Number, Shape, Handling Data and Algebra) which will be very useful for pupils for revision purposes and act as a reminder for when they forget the meaning of key terminology. Suitable for both KS3 students or those studying foundation at KS4. Links excellently with Literacy and promotes the use of this within Mathematics.
