My year 11 certificates for their last day. Have shown some I mocked up, the other page includes an image you can crop with all the characters you’ll need on it. Worked really well with my class, depending on the kids, serious and silly awards work equally well!

This was used as the first lesson in a murder mystery scheme of work (as you can tell from the starter). However, this was a successful and fun lesson for my year 8 group for understanding imperatives.

A Level English Language Investigation Defence Lesson

This series of lessons (with resources) is designed to support a group that have had the initial intro to the NEA and understand what the project entails. Language Investigation Defences are an active learning tool for every member of the class. Students may have narrowed down their focus to one avenue of investigation but still need help to refine their idea. This series of lessons is perfectly suited to ensure that each individual student receives group feedback as well as allowing staff to ensure that misconceptions in the class are eradicated. I have included annotated versions of hypothesis, introductions and methodologies so that students can see what is rewarded and how to construct their ideas. Get To Know Your Class Creative Writing Lesson

Here you’ll find a powerpoint and word document plan to support a ‘getting to know you’ exercise with your new classes. I’ve found this to work really well with both KS3 and KS4 classes. It gives me a clear insight into who these lovely young people are, as well as a sense of their capacity for writing. Make a note of passions they list when reading through their responses so you can consider this in your teaching for the rest of the year. I always offer a sweet treat reward for the funniest or most interesting answers!

Recommended Reads Posters for Staff and Students

(0)
Promote literacy and book conversations with these attractive posters! We always re-vamp them around World Book Day and to accompany our Readathon! These multi-purpose posters get staff and students talking about what they’re reading. New staff are asked to submit choices and can print a copy to stick to their door. HoDs can choose to create one for wider reading for their department. Particularly valuable for KS4 and KS5 Students were encouraged as part of a literacy project to create their own. We allowed them to work in friendship groups. There were merits available to those who submitted them! We also added these to our website to demonstrate student suggestions and so parents could look at recommended reads from students in their child’s age group. For 51ºÚÁÏ purposes, everyone is asked to only share a Memoji of themselves and, for students, first names only.

KS3 Gothic Create Your Own Monster using 'Magic, The Gathering'

(0)
Find here a lesson that can easily be slotted into a KS3 unit of work on the gothic. Students are asked to explore the definition of ‘monster’, watch a clip from Frankenstein and then read a section of chapter 5. This leads into the creative writing task using the style of ‘Magic, The Gathering’. I have found that the ‘flavour text’ of these cards engages students in going beyond the obvious. It allows them to develop thoughtful and interesting ways for their characters to behave. This can be used over a couple of lessons or set for cover.
iGCSE Prose Intro Banning the Novel Of Mice and Men & To Kill a Mockingbird

iGCSE Prose Intro Banning the Novel Of Mice and Men & To Kill a Mockingbird

(0)
A completely resourced lesson to introduce critical readership of racial terms in ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ and ‘Of Mice and Men’ to iGCSE students. Racism fundamentally shaped society and politics in 20th century America. This resource seeks to educate students that terms are used in these texts that are unacceptable in society today. While we may use offensive terms in our exam analysis, we will not be reading them aloud or having a discussion about whether they cause harm. Students will be walked through learning opportunities that connect iGCSE lang and lit skills to the novel (mostly OMAM but easily swapped to TKAM). This is how I have begun my iGCSE prose study for the last few years and found it to be a great way to ensure that all students feel safe and understand what is expected of them. I am always looking for new ways to deliver this content and would gratefully receive any suggestions.
