These engaging, varied, and informative lessons have been designed to help students gain a valuable understanding of the plot, characters, language, and key messages in Suzanne Collins’ ‘The Hunger Games.’ All of the resources that you need to teach are included in the bundle: Whole lesson step-by-step PowerPoint presentations, informative and engaging , worksheets, activities, and lesson plans. Contained in the bundle are lessons based on: Description of District 12; Katniss Everdeen; Collins’ Key Messages; Race to the Cornucopia (Descriptive Writing Lesson). Stimulating, visual, and easily adaptable, these lessons provide suggested learning objectives and outcomes for students of a wide-range of abilities - The vast majority of tasks are differentiated to allow for different abilities and needs in your classroom. Each lesson loosely follows this logical learning journey to ensure that students learn in bite-size steps: Engaging Defining/ Understanding Identifying/Remembering Analysing/ Creating Peer or self evaluating. This engaging, varied, and informative scheme of learning is designed to help students gain understanding, assessment skills, and key interpretations of Suzanne Collins’ ‘The Hunger Games.’ Made up of a wide-range of interesting and exciting lessons, students should complete this scheme having gathered vital skills in: interpreting the significant meanings of the text, understanding the writer’s ideas within the text, identifying the traits of key characters, settings, and themes, understanding dramatic and language devices, and relating the text to its social and historical context. Stimulating, visual, and easily adaptable, these lessons provide suggested learning objectives and outcomes for students of a wide-range of abilities - The vast majority of tasks are differentiated to allow for different abilities and needs in your classroom. This engaging and informative lesson enables students to understand how the lead protagonist of Suzanne Collins’ ‘The Hunger Games’ – Katniss Everdeen - develops as a character throughout the novel. In doing so, students learn how she develops and acquires the key skills, characteristics, beliefs, and values to become the complete dystopian heroine. The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through: Comprehending how Katniss is initially introduced to the reader; Reading extracts from Chapters 3, 7 and 14 of The Hunger Games, identifying how Katniss’ character develops; Analysing how her character fits the role of the ‘Dystopian Hero/Heroine’, and matching her traits to the different features of this character form; Applying their understanding by creating their own Dystopian Hero/Heroine; Self assessing their learning attempts. Included is: Whole lesson PowerPoint - colourful and comprehensive;’ Extracts from The Hunger Games (from Chapters 3, 7, and 14); Character Profile for Katniss Everdeen; Blank Template for Creating a Dystopian Hero/Heroine; A comprehensive lesson plan; All resources are provided in Word (for easy editing) and PDF (to ensure formatting remains fixed between different computers). This engaging and informative lesson enables students to make precise interpretations of the descriptive language used by Suzanne Collins in her descriptions of District 12 in ‘The Hunger Games.’ They also learn how the depiction of settings can have a profound impact upon the tone and atmosphere of a novel, and apply this understanding (along with their knowledge of the key language devices) to form their own vivid and imaginative descriptions of places. The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through: Understanding the power of places and settings, especially the impact that they have on atmosphere and tone; Defining each of the different types of descriptive devices, through completing an interactive group activity; Reading extracts from the text in which Collins describes District 12, and identifying the language techniques used to paint an image of place in the minds of the readers; Analysing the effectiveness of each of Collins’ descriptive devices; Creating their own description of a desolate, run-down place, utilising appropriate and effective descriptive devices throughout; Peer assessing each other’s learning attempts. Included is: Whole lesson PowerPoint - colourful and comprehensive; Cards for the Card Sorting Activity;’ Extracts from The Hunger Games; Individual analysis worksheet; Writing to Describe Helpsheet; Comprehensive Lesson Plan. These creative writing structure strips are designed to help children with formulating creative writing pieces based on 10 different Greek Myths. They include content to include in each paragraph, questions to consider, and key language techniques. They are tried and tested in the classroom - they are loved by teachers and students, and have helped to enable some incredible compositions! Included are structure strips for aiding students’ creative writing about: -Daedalus and Icarus -Echo and Narcissus -Hades and Persephone -Hercules’ Labours -Hermes and Apollo -Odysseus and Cyclops -Pandora’s Box -Perseus and Medusa -Theseus and the Minotaur -The template to create your own structure strips! These structure strips were initially designed for KS2 children, however (perhaps with a tweak here and there) they could be used for lower KS3 or upper KS1.
