48 differentiated challenge cards, focusing on French ER verbs in the present tense. The questions are aimed at advanced beginner French into***intermediate French*** students, and have a multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. The questions are all in French, and are differentiated, ranging in complexity and challenge. There may be some vocabulary and grammar that students are not yet familiar with, and these questions give them the opportunity to learn and apply new language. This means that the activity is not solely about practising and consolidating learned language, but also actively engaging with, and learning, new language. A range of grammatical concepts are addressed in the questions too, such as gender agreement, direct and indirect objects and question format in French.
There are translation questions from both French into English and English into French. This introduces students to the concept of translation from a very early point in their French learning programme.
To maximise the learning potential, we look at the multiple-choice questions as a whole-group, identifying not only why there is a single correct response, but what the errors are in the other choices: identifying errors, and explaining precisely why something is inaccurate or incorrect, helps students to think about language a little more laterally, and ensures that they are thinking concepts through, rather than simply relying on learned responses.
The set comprises the following non-editable files:
= 48 differentiated question cards laminate if possible - the cards are more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years
= answer key & answer recording sheet we use the recording sheet for more formal assessment purposes; students generally use their class workbooks to note responses, saving both prep time and expense

Ideal for cross-curricular learning in French class: students can develop their knowledge of the geography of Europe in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. At the same time, students are developing their French language skills: speaking, listening and reading in particular, as well as broadening their French vocabulary. Play both as a whole-group team quiz, and in pairs or small groups on a regular basis - students are particularly keen to see if they can beat their own points record, and are really motivated by their developing knowledge.
The set contains all European countries and capital cities, including some island communities such as the Faroe Islands and Guernsey. Each question has 4 answers to choose from. The correct answer is given in capital letters. The quiz cards are numbered, but questions can be asked in random order too: simply place all the cards in a bowl, box or tin, and work your way through.
There are two quiz challenges:
= Challenge 1 gives the country as a prompt, with four possible capital cities to choose from.
= Challenge 2 gives the capital city as a prompt, with four possible countries to choose from. This challenge uses the definite article in the responses to help consolidate students’ knowledge of the gender of individual countries .
The card numbers for Challenge 1 are in the top right-hand corner; Challenge 2 in the top left-hand corner so that the cards can be organised and sorted easily. Laminate the cards if possible: they’re more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years.

A whole-group lively and communicative language learning game. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompts of the French Christmas images, makes it perfect for practising, reinforcing and refreshing French Christmas vocabulary. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking and reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too.
The aim of the game is to arrange the cards in the relevant order. Students can either create a human chain, holding the cards themselves, or a card line, on the floor, a longish table or other flat surface. There are 32 French Christmas words with images, and it’s likely that students will have more than one card each per game, depending on the size of the class. The vocabulary and images provide a really useful stimulus for discussion about Christmas traditions and practices in French-speaking countries.
There are two games, each with a different challenge:
= Challenge 1: the nouns written out in full with the definite article, and the Q & A J’ai… Qui a…? Students walk around, calling out the question.
= Challenge 2: the nouns are in a different order, with only the definite article, and the Q & A As-tu…? Oui (Non) j’ai… . This challenge puts students’ vocabulary recall to the test, and students walk around, addressing other students individually.
Play either as a whole-group game, or as a team game - which team can complete the challenge first? You can either play the challenges consecutively, or as a team game, swapping the challenges so that each team has a chance to play both challenges.

Focus on French ER verbs, also featuring a broad range of other French verb groups, including both auxiliaries être and avoir. Students may find access to a bilingual dictionary helpful. The questions are aimed at intermediate French into advanced intermediate French students, and are ideal for multi-skill language learning. A range of grammatical concepts are addressed in the questions too, such as preceding direct object agreement and negative sentences in French.
There are translation questions from both French into English and English into French. It is important for students to learn that ‘word for word’ does not work successfully as a translation strategy, that rendering language into what speakers of either language would actually say / write, or how they would express something either verbally or in writing, may be either quite similar, or quite different. Tense usage differs between the languages too, and the answer key reflects this for additional consolidation. The important thing to convey in their translation is accurate meaning.

Ideal for cross-curricular learning in Spanish class: students can develop their knowledge of the geography of Europe through classroom decor, really making the most of learning display. There are 134 portrait posters (A4, 8.5 x 11) in Spanish showing European countries, capital cities and flags, including some island communities such as the Faroe Islands and Guernsey. There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the posters can help students develop their general knowledge and understanding of European geography. At the same time, they are developing their Spanish language skills: speaking, listening and reading in particular, as well as broadening their Spanish vocabulary.
We regularly ask questions during Talk Time, such as ***¿Cuál es la capital de…?***, or ¿Sà o no? Barcelona es la capital de España? - I’ve found this to be a really effective way of promoting speaking in Spanish class, as students tend to find this a really challenging skill, particularly at the beginning of their Spanish learning program.
There are several countries, for example Armenia, that are often classed as belonging either to Europe or to Asia. There are also two posters for some countries, such as France, officially known as República Francesa - you can choose either that, or the more frequently-used Francia to display.
Laminate the posters if you can - they display more effectively, and will remain in excellent condition for years, especially if you use them as flashcards to introduce Europe in Spanish class. There are two formats to choose from - Europe map, or plain without frame to keep prep costs to a minimum.
The Lively Learning Classroom offers a wide range of Spanish resources, including special offer bundles and freebies.

German separable verbs can be quite a challenging concept for English-speaking German learners, and focused practice really helps them consolidate their understanding of how to conjugate them accurately, particularly the location of the separable prefix at the end of the clause , and the various contexts in which the prefix is not separated, such as with subordinating conjunctions and modal verbs.

Set 1: o’clock & half past the hour - students often find half past in German quite tricky, so the focused practice is particularly useful

It’s useful to work with telling the time in German quite quickly with beginner German students, as it lends itself really well to promoting speaking in the classroom, discussing daily routines for example.
There are two questions: Wie spät ist es / Wie viel Uhr ist es? with a particular clock face, and students write the response on their recording sheet or in their workbooks. The second question is Richtig oder falsch and students write either richtig or falsch - where the answer is falsch, remind students to write the correct time for additional consolidation.

Students can work happily challenging themselves and each other to create a perfect domino time sequence line. The game has a bonus multi-focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, and reading.
There are three games, each with a slightly different level of challenge:
= Challenge 1 features a range of clock times,o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past the hour - students tend to learn those clock times first, so it’s good to have a real focus on them to ensure students are confident with the general concept of telling the time in Spanish. The dominoes feature en punto to express o’clock, but it’s useful to point out to students that it’s not absolutely necessary, and they’ll see Es la una for example, perhaps even more frequently than Es la una en punto, which tends to convey a certain emphasis. The time phrase appears first, followed by the clock face.
= Challenge 2 features a range of all analogue clock times, and is a slightly longer game than Challenge One. Again, the time phrase appears first, followed by the clock face.
= Challenge 3*** also features a range of analogue clock times, and is the same size as Challenge Two. In this challenge, the clock face appears first, followed by the time phrase, which works slightly differently on recall, and really does help to consolidate knowledge.
There’s definitely prep involved - download, print out, and laminate. Laminating is definitely worth the extra time and expense, because the dominoes are far more learner-friendly, and will last in excellent condition for years. The background design on each challenge is different, allowing students to identify which challenge the individual dominoes belong to.
