This KS2 or Early KS3 beginners French vocabulary revision / review activity is a giant crossword puzzle, ideal for fun group work. Includes Numbers (Les Nombres / Les Numeros), Calendar (Days, Months, Dates - Les Jours, Les Mois, La Date), Greetings and Introductions, Colours (Les Couleurs), Weather (La Meteo / Le Temps), Classroom Objects (Les Objets de la Classe) and more. With around 100 clues, it is ideal for groups, with children perhaps competing against other groups to solve the puzzle as fast as possible. It works well as a fun revision activity at the start of term / back to school time to refresh students' French basics vocabulary or at the end of a term / end of the year.
Alternatively, use it as an early finisher activity for completion over several lessons / weeks. In addition to the crossword solution, there's an alphabetical list of answers which you can give out for support where necessary. Or any clues not managed could be looked up online or in a French dictionary. It's fine in A4 but if you are using it with a larger group you might want to print in A3. The crossword grid and solution are included in one PDF, with the clues and support sheet in the second one.

FRENCH HALLOWEEN VOCABULARY
Use this page to support students playing the games, if required. You can display it on a screen or print it.
FOUR IN A ROW GAMES
4 different game boards. Print in colour or b&w and laminate as required. Works well in A3 for larger groups but A4 is good too. First to get four in a row - vertically, horizontally or diagonally - wins. Students roll dice, then choose a Halloween word from that number column and say it in French. If correct, use a dry-wipe marker to put a symbol or initial in that box, and so on.
āI HAVEā¦WHO HAS?ā GAME 1
This game practises some of the key Halloween vocabulary in phrases alongside some numbers. Print and laminate the 30 illustrated cards, which form a continuous loop so you can start with any one. Distribute amongst players. First player reads the English language side of one of their cards and then all players check if they have the matching number of the correct item. If they do, they will read out both sides of their card. Students use āQui aā¦?ā (āWho hasā¦?ā) to ask the question each time. Instead of the usual āJāaiā¦ā (āI haveā¦ā) for the other side of the cards, students could use the expression āIl y aā¦ā (āThere is⦠/ there areā¦ā).
āI HAVEā¦WHO HAS?ā GAME 2
A 20-card word-only game, similar to the one above. It uses a wider pool of vocabulary but without the numbers.
BINGO / TIC TAC TOE CARDS
Use these 30 different cards for games of Bingo (the teacher could read out French Halloween words) or Tic Tac Toe / Noughts and Crosses, with students taking it in turns to say aloud a French Halloween word from their card. If cards are laminated, students could write on them with a dry-wipe marker.

POWERPOINT
Includes cultural information about the fact that Halloween is not particularly celebrated in France and that French people are more likely to celebrate āLa Toussaintā on November 1st. Of course, French-speaking people elsewhere do celebrate Halloween so itās a good chance to learn some fun vocabulary. The next few slides introduce more than 20 key words, one at a time, such as spider, black cat, broom, sweets, cemetery, bat, pumpkin, scarecrow, ghost, owl, moon, haunted house, monster, skeleton, witch, cauldron etc (in French of course). Following this, slides review these words, showing an image for students to give the word, with the answer appearing on the click of a mouse. Halloween-related French phrases are also taught, such as āIām wearing a witch costumeā and āIām scaredā and there are also slides teaching how to say āThere are three black catsā and āThere are four spidersā etc. Thereās a slide with almost all key images on the screen for students to āsplatā with a fly swatter or equivalent (if displayed on a whiteboard) when the teacher calls out the words in French. NEWLY ADDED FOR 2019: Thereās 2 rounds of an interactive Hexagons Game, where teams compete to make a trail of correct translations of Halloween vocabulary across the screen. Finally, the last 30+ slides form the memory game āKimās Gameā, which could be played in teams, with students working out which images are missing each time and giving the word in French.
The additional PDF version of the presentation will help those without PowerPoint access. It allows you to teach the vocabulary but does not retain the mouse-click interactivity of the original. The Hexagons Game also does not work without the interactivity and has therefore been omitted from the PDF version.
FLASHCARDS
Most of the Halloween words (23 in total) feature on these for classroom display.

If you are teaching Describing People in French (Personality Descriptions) at KS2 or KS3 or equivalents, use this substantial KS2 and KS3 Les Traits de Caractere / de Personnalite) PowerPoint Lesson Presentation (also in PDF format). Itās full of teaching points and activities to introduce and consolidate 20 adjectives and linked questions and phrases. Thereās a set of printable flash cards too. Among the 70 slides, thereās teaching about adjectival agreement and common intensifiers (assez, trop, vraiment etc), review activities, short comprehension tasks, an interactive game and then thereās an additional 40 slides, making over 110 in total, comprising a fun memory game. Enough for more than one lesson!
My French basics / beginners resources are designed for Year 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 but might suit others, depending on experience. Please check the preview to assess suitability. Due to spelling differences with āorganised / organizedā and ādisorganised / disorganizedā, the resources are included in UK and US versions. Revise and extend Halloween in French vocabulary (LāHalloween) this October, in KS3, KS4, or with adult learners, using this giant FSL crossword puzzle. There are 90+ spooky and scary themed words in this huge puzzle. Ideal for a whole lesson, or add this packet to your cover lesson plans or early finishers activities bank. You could return to it over several sessions. This is low prep, great for collaboration, printable, differentiated, has an answer key, and thereās even an optional hidden sentence challenge! Best not used with absolute beginners, as itās designed to review AND expand studentsā existing vocabulary, to provide a challenge. Depending on experience and ability of students and level of support given, this can work with Key Stage 3 and 4 and beyond.
Please click on the preview file to check suitability for your students.
Fun: Giant crosswords are enjoyable to complete.
Low prep: Great for sub lessons and busy times.
Flexible: Can fill a whole lesson or more, or be completed over multiple days.
Early finishers: Great as an early finisher activity or extension, maybe to be competed over several sessions.
Collaboration: Although it can be used for individuals, itās especially good for pairs or small groups.
Differentiation: Alternative clue page & vocab support page.
Challenge: Fun hidden sentence extension!
Printable: PDF file - 15 pages.
Ā
HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE THIS ACTIVITY:
There are 2 versions of the clue sheets ā one with just the word itself in English (to be translated into French) and an easier version with the first letter given. Thereās a larger print version of the latter one too.
Choose whether to provide the alphabetical answer list, perhaps just to support certain students, or distribute it only when students have done as much as they can independently
Consider using mixed-ability groups
Decide whether to allow access to online or traditional dictionaries, perhaps later when students have completed as much as they can independently
Consider whether to use the hidden sentence challenge version (students use a blank grid with stars printed on certain squares, and then put the letters together from the star boxes to spell out a hidden word). There are 2 versions of the recording sheet for this challenge, should you wish to use them, and separate answer keys
Early finishers could be directed to online sources to check out the pronunciation of unfamiliar words
Whatever you choose, I hope your students have as much fun completing it as I did compiling it!
You might want to expand the crossword if using with larger groups but if you canāt, it will still work in standard size.
