Beginners KS2 / KS3 (Year 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8) French speaking games (2 sets of 40-card loop games/ follow me cards / dominoes) for revision of French calendar (le calendrier) vocabulary - dates, months (les mois), days of the week (les jours), as well as numbers to 31.
Â
My FSL / MFL French basics resources and units suit students beginning French, near beginners (and intermediate learners for revision) in:
* Upper Primary (Key Stage 2) - Year 4, 5, 6 (Y4 Y5 Y6)
* Secondary (Key Stage 3) - especially Year 7 and 8 (Y7 / Y8)
* Equivalents such as Grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 Core French in Canada
* May suit others, depending on experience
Â
These resources will help you plan multiple lessons. Additional US format date versions are also now included.
One set features the date and month, the other (which has different dates) also includes the day. This game works especially well as a fun activity to teach the difference between the two ways of answering the question Quelle est la date? (What is the date?), which depends on whether you are including the day:
C'est samedi cinq avril
C'est le cinq avril
Another teaching point reinforced with this activity is the fact that days and months do not start with capital letters in French.
Print and laminate the sets for repeated use. There is no start or end card in either set; they are continuous loops so you can start wherever you want.
This resource is available alongside other French Calendar resources (presentation, more games, worksheets and puzzles) in this bundle: French Calendar Bundle

You can use these as ordinary task cards but a fun whole class game of Scoot works really well:
Â
HOW TO SET UP AND PLAY âSCOOT!â:
Print and cut the 40 numbered cards. Thereâs a set with English instructions and a set with French instructions, which you might want to use for older, more able or more experienced students. Two of the cards feature vocabulary that is different in Canada, therefore these two are repeated in a Canadian version at the end of the file.
Consider laminating cards if you wish to use again.
If playing Scoot, place or stick the cards on desks so that all students can answer one at a time.
Give students a 1-page or 2-page blank answer grid. Consider mixed ability pairs and / or supplying the Christmas vocabulary support sheet for differentiation.
Set a timer so that students have 30 seconds to sit and answer a card before scooting to the next one. All students move at the same time when the allotted time is done. You can call âScoot!â or perhaps âAllez!â each time. Ensure you explain to students in which direction they should move.
When students have answered all cards, mark together. An answer key is included.
Even if you donât have 40 students, you can still use all cards if you have a big enough space to arrange them. However, if you only want the same number of cards as you have students, you can remove some of the later cards. Itâs also possible to remove cards you feel might be too hard for your students.
Substitute cards you donât wish to use with the included Pause Cards, numbering them appropriately and thus allowing students to take intermittent short brain breaks.

Answer and instruction cardsare included. Boards 1 and 2 feature French words to be translated into English, while boards 3 and 4 feature English words to be translated into French. Board 5 is for lower ability pupils and features pictures and multiple choice answers. Most vocabulary comes from these topics:

classroom objects (les objets de la classe)

Beginners French Speaking Games for this key area. A board game and vocabulary card for fun practice of basic French greetings (les salutations), farewells and introductions (Je me presente / Introducing myself), six 10-card loop games and a jigsaw puzzle. Instructions for all activities are included. With the board game, students take turns to roll a dice and move the appropriate number of spaces. They have to say aloud in French the word, phrase or question they land on, otherwise they return to the space they came from. 3 versions are included (with minor changes around nationality and country to suit different locations). The vocabulary card can be provided for support where required. There are also six 10-card loop games, which are coloured differently. If printing in black and white use different coloured card to help keep them separate. Designed for oral practice in small groups, with a student reading out the English word or phrase on their card and others checking if they have the French translation, then reading this out - and so on until the loop is completed. In each loop you can start at any point. With the jigsaw puzzle, print, laminate and cut out the 16 triangular pieces. Students match key French vocabulary with English translations to build a larger triangle.

More info:
All presentations are in PowerPoint format (with mostly editable text).
Additional PDF versions of many of the presentations have been added for convenience in case teachers donât have PowerPoint access at some point. Some of these additional PDF versions are yet to be added but you can download the bundle again for no extra charge when I update the content to include these.
Please note that the additional PDF version of the presentations do not retain the interactivity of the PowerPoint. As a result, interactive elements have been omitted from the PDF versions.
The printable flashcard sets (10 of the presentations come with these) are in PDF format.
The French Colour pack is a multi-resource bundle, including a shorter presentation than the others but also including printable games, puzzle and worksheet.

Students reply in French, using the image on their card.
Mime Game: A team game, where students mime feelings to make their teammates guess correctly in French.
Square Jigsaw Puzzle: Students rearrange the puzzle pieces so that each French feelings phrase is placed next to the English translation. The letters on the outside edge of the big square will form a linked sentence.
