This is a print and go grammar lesson focusing on irregular past tense verb forms. It is for Pre-Intermediate adult ESL Students. It is an integrated lesson with a mix of speaking, grammar and writing.
It begins with some structured grammatical activities which could be done orally first and then written. The second part of the lesson is more open – ended, allowing students to integrate what they’ve learned.
The focus of the lesson is on
•Irregular past tense verb forms
•Negatives and questions in the past tense (which many students find challenging)
Most of the Activities are self explanatory and answers are provided for the structured activities. In most cases there are other possible answers.
The open-ended activities provide opportunities for extension for stronger students and flexibility in how it is delivered.
I would expect the lesson to take about 2 hours for an average class, with some of the written tasks set for homework.
Ready to print and go. Easy …
Prints to A4 paper and uses UK/Australian English
I have checked this carefully but if you find any typos please le me know so that I can fix them.

This lesson contains 5 fun activities that are suitable for beginner or elementary Adult ESL students. Most of the activities involve speaking and listening. If students are able, most of the activities can be followed with a short writing activity and/or oral feedback to the class.
I have used all these activities at some time with adult ESL students. They work for students who are migrants, refugees or international students.
They are great for starting a new year or term because
1.They help students to get to know each other
2.They help you to get the know the students and also assess their level of English
These activities also work at other times of the year too and are a great way to get students talking. So if you don’t use them all you can keep them for later.
Bonus included - suggestions for 3 other no prep get to know you activities.
Please be aware- spelling is UK/Australia and prints to A4 paper.

Idioms are challenging for ESL students as they can not be directly translated. But they are fun to teach . This is an engaging lesson based on Idioms using body part that will generate lots of interaction and laughs. It is suitable for Adult ESL students of Intermediate level and above. It is also provides useful Vocab extension for IELTS speaking exam which requires use of idiomatic language to get the higher band levels.
I have created this resource with 2 Options as I know that teachers often don’t have time to prep resources and are looking for something to print and Go
Option A involves prepping cards - cutting/laminating etc.
Tip if short of time – give students the photocopied pages and scissors and they cut their own set. Option A is the best option - it will be more interactive and fun for the students.
But if you are short of time :
Option B is no prep – just printing
The resource includes:
2 sets of cards with 24 cards each
Set A = Idioms x 24 Blue borders
Set B = meaning x 24 Red borders
1 set per pair works best or you could use 1 set per group
Plus 2 Activity worksheets that can be used at different levels and in different ways
Activity 4 a is a gap fill activity with the missing idioms provided
Activity 4 b is the same gap fill activity without the missing idioms (therefore much harder)
Activity 5 (2 pages) is a worksheet to record the meaning of the idioms and examples of use
Language used is based on British/Australian usage

A grammar resource for Intermediate Level Adult ESL students. It begins with a review powerpoint and then 4 Activities of increasing difficulty. There are 2 writing tasks a grammar activity and a speaking/listening group activity. The final activity is open ended and quite challenging but a good introduction to the language required for IELTS Writing Task 1 (or other academic writing)
I am aware that not all teachers have access to photocopying facilities or the ability to print off heaps of copies. For this reason, I try to keep the printed pages as dense as possible to reduce the number of printed pages. It is also better for the environment!
I have planned this so that slides 2 – 4 (or 5) are used as a PowerPoint review with the whole class – hence the coloured background.
The rest (on white background) can be printed (or not) as required.
I use this lesson with a mixed ability Beginners Adult Migrant ESL class. It is an introduction to the Past Continuous/Past Progressive Tense in a context that is relevant to adult students with language that they will be able to use in their everyday lives.
It is not for complete beginners as some prior knowledge is required. This lesson assumes some knowledge of the past simple tense and follows on from another resource I have written ‘Introduction to Past Tense’.
It’s easy to use, just ** Print and GO**. I’ve even included answers for some of the activities to make it easier for you to check the answers with the whole class, using Power Point.
The language level of this lesson is higher than some of my other Beginner lessons, so depending on your class you may need to scaffold, go through with the class first or pair able/less able students.
The lesson covers a lot of relevant elementary language:
· Reading and understanding simple text about familiar topics.
· Past Continuous tense – form and use
· Question forms using past continuous tense
· Everyday vocabulary
· Speaking practice – asking and answering questions
· Writing simple sentences
· An Introduction to writing complex sentences using because
This lesson contains:
· A text with oral comprehension questions
· A vocabulary activity
· Past continuous/progressive grammar focus
· A grammar activity
· A cloze activity
· 2 pair work speaking and listening activities
· An introduction to because to join 2 sentences
· 2 Writing Activities
This lesson prints to A4 paper and may have some UK/Australian spelling.

This lesson is designed for Adult ESL Students at high beginner or pre intermediate levels. It will work well with a mixed ability/level class and there are opportunities for differentiation.
It is a complete lesson (maybe 2) on the topic of Global Warming and an introduction to Conditionals (zero form). It includes Reading, Writing ,Listening and Speaking activities.
Conditionals not usually included in Beginner’s courses because it is quite complex. This lesson will be challenging for most Beginners as it also includes some complex vocabulary There is a deliberate repetition of sentences in the activities to keep this simpler for beginners .
I have also kept the vocabulary level simple and relevant to beginner Adult ESL students.
Most of the activities are quite structured, self explanatory and build on each other so they are best done in order. The activities could be done orally in pairs first, if that works for your students. You can structure the activities as much or as little as your students need. A detailed lesson plan and answers are provided
This lesson aims to provide students with the functional language to talk about global warming and express something which is always true if the condition in the sentence is met.
The lesson is based on a dialogue that introduces some vocabulary about global warming demonstrates the use of the zero conditonal form
It covers a lot of other elementary language and language skills:
Reading and understanding simple texts.
Zero conditional – for general truths
Vocabulary of global warming and general life situations.
Completing a cloze activity
Sentence matching and sentence completion.
Question forms – What do you do if…?
Speaking/Listening practice – asking and answering questions.
Writing simple sentences
Like all my resources, this lesson is designed specifically for adults. It incorporates language that adults will need to use and situations that are relevant to adult learners.
This resource may include some Australian/UK language and prints to A4 paper.
If you want to expand on this lesson, I do have a much more difficult Intermediate level zero conditional and first conditional lesson also on the topic of global warming , in my store. But it is quite a lot more difficult than this one.
