I use this lesson with a mixed ability beginner adult ESL class. It is a complete lesson (maybe 2) on the topic of jobs, using the present simple tense. It is based on a short text about a person’s job. This is one of a series of present simple lessons. It is the second resource I have about jobs. Jobs #2 (this one) is a bit more difficult than the original Jobs, but they compliment each other.

The lesson integrates speaking, listening, reading and writing and covers a lot of core elementary language.

As in all my lessons, the language is presented in a context that is relevant to adult students with language that they will be able to use in their everyday lives. In this lesson the context is jobs.

This lesson can be used in several ways:

•with total beginners – supported by a lot of scaffolding by the teacher

•as an introduction to the present simple tense

•as a review lesson tor ongoing students

There is plenty of opportunity to differentiate learning according to your students’ levels and needs. I have provided alternatives for some of the activities and suggested ways to adapt for others.

It may take 1 lesson or could take several lessons depending on your learners and how you present the material.

This lesson can be used with a whole class, a small group or one to one.

Resource includes:

  • Reading and understanding simple text about familiar topics.

  • Present simple tense – focusing on 3rd person

  • Specific job related vocabulary

  • Question forms - yes/no and Wh

  • Speaking practice –asking and answering questions

  • Writing simple sentences and a short paragraph

  • Completing a form

Some language used is UK/Australian and prints to A4 paper

Present Simple Tense - Jobs BUNDLE - Adult ESOL, EAL, ESL

These 4 lessons are all based on the theme of Jobs, which is very relevant to Adult ESL students. All lessons focus on Present Simple Tense. The lessons get progressively more difficult with more complex vocabulary, whilst still focusing on all aspects of the present simple tense -questions, negatives and 3rd person forms. Lesson 4 is a guided speaking practice that is an extension of a similar activity in Lesson 1. It will extend and consolidate the previous lessons. These lessons would work best if done in order but also could be used with multi level classes. These resources contain UK/Australian spelling and print to A4 paper.
