Lena's story
How did you come to study with Tes Institute?
My school recommended Tes Institute because of its flexible structure, strong reputation, and clear focus on developing classroom practitioners through real, embedded learning. As a full-time teacher and Sendco, I needed a route that could align with my professional responsibilities while offering rigorous and reflective training.
Why did you choose to undertake this course? What did you want to achieve?
I had already built several years of experience in the classroom, but I wanted to formalise my qualifications and gain QTS in a way that recognised and strengthened my practice. For me, this course was about achieving professional validation while continuing to grow as an inclusive, evidence-informed educator.
How has this course supported you to achieve your goals?
The course offered a structure that allowed me to reflect on and enhance my teaching, backed by current research and expert feedback. Through the process, I’ve not only achieved QTS but also deepened my understanding of pedagogy, inclusive practice and leadership in education. It has given me clarity, confidence and a renewed sense of purpose.
How did you find the application process?
I initially found the application process quite detailed and, at times, a little overwhelming, especially while juggling full-time teaching responsibilities. However, once I got started, the expectations became clearer, and I appreciated the guidance and encouragement I received from my Tes pathway tutor along the way. Their support made what initially felt daunting much more manageable.
What did you enjoy most about the course?
I most enjoyed the opportunity to pause and reflect critically on my practice through the lens of the Teachers’ Standards. It encouraged me to be more intentional about what I do every day in the classroom, and the reflective tasks gave me space to celebrate growth I might not have otherwise noticed.
What support did you receive during the course and how did this help you to progress?
The support from my pathway tutor was exceptional! It was encouraging, clear, and highly responsive. Regular feedback, timely reminders and a balanced blend of challenge and reassurance helped me stay on track. Equally, the collaborative nature of the school-based mentor role ensured that I was never working in isolation.
What would you tell another person who is thinking of applying for this course?
If you’re already embedded in a teaching role and are committed to improving your practice, this course provides the perfect balance of structure, flexibility and practical relevance. It respects your experience while pushing you to grow.
How would you sum up your experience with Tes Institute in a sentence?
A supportive, challenging and rewarding journey that has empowered me to become a more reflective practitioner.
