Whoâs it for?
This resource has been designed for pupils in the early years, years one and two as well as older students needing additional support with learning.
Resource Details
Page 1 This resource explores the concept of âoppositesâ through two pictures showing the same scene with x9 differences (between the pictures) to identify. These differences are all âoppositesâ. Learners draw a circle around the part of the scene where they identify an opposite, they could used a different colour for each pair of opposites.
Once learners identify a difference between the picture scenes they find the matching labels below. Learners link the two opposite (word) labels using a straight line connecting these words.
Page 2
The layout of this page is exactly the same layout at page 1 with the opposite differences identified in both picture scenes with a circle around the image and lines connecting the word label to make these clear.
The opposites included are - on/off, up/down, sit/stand, sunny/rainy, shut/open, dry/wet, above/below, alive/not alive and in front/behind.

There are x8 words and x8 images to read and match.
Whoâs it for?
This resource has been designed for Early Years children who have been learning these sounds for the first time, pupils in Year 1 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds as well as older learners needing to revisit these sounds who would enjoy this Christmas themed activity.
Resource DetailsâŠ
Each word card has a coloured triangle (top, left). Pink indicates these words are using Phase 2 sounds. Purple indicates that these words use Phase 3 sounds. Red graphemes indicate that these sounds might be more tricky as different people can pronounce these sounds differently. E.g. the âerâ in the word âcrackerâ may be pronounced as an âuhâ or even an âaâ sound. Learners may need support with the red graphemes.
All images/words included in this resource have been chose because they can be sounded out - the âtickâ pictured on the coloured (pink/purple) triangle indicates that these words can be sounded out. These colour coded details are also included on the resource.

Whatâs included?
This download includes x1 portrait orientation pdf to make an âChristmas Countdown - Advent Calendar Candleâ to count down the December days from the 1st to the 24th.
Whatâs it for?
This countdown has been designed to be used for by an individual/group or class to countdown the days to Christmas. Behind each numbered flap is a Christmas image and a few related words to read. This resource has been designed to be made by or with an adult - an adult leading the way with the steps to follow and a learner reading and helping as they are able.
Whoâs it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students with additional learning needs. An older, more able, pupil may be able to make this âwithâ or âforâ a younger learner in a paired activity, working together.
Resource Details
Everything needed for the finished Advent Candle Countdown Calendar is included on the pdf. There are six main instructions and additional, detailed, information positioned next to the relevant parts to make what to do clearer. The overall task is to cut along the red dotted lines to cut out the main candle shape and separate the âflapsâ which will fold over the image (for each day) to hide it.
Numbers are provided to stick onto these flaps in order - from the base of the candle up to the top. Alternatively these numbers can be written by hand instead - whatever is preferred/easiest.
To make one advent calendar learners will need:
a pencil (to write their name)
a pair of scissors
a glue stick
a small ball of Blue Tac (the size of a small marble)
The piece of Blue Tac will then be made into x24 teeny tiny balls which are used to secure the flaps closed until it is the date to be opened.
Suggestions
This pdf will need to be printed onto white card or it wonât be strong enough to stand up by itself.
Double sided sticky tape might be a better alternative to secure the candle shape together instead of using a glue stick. Glue/double-sided sticky tape is to be applied to the single purple strip, positioned vertically on the right hand side of the pdf.
Read the six steps carefully before starting to help make the process as easy as possible.

Whatâs it for?
These Christmas alphabet matching cards have been designed to be printed onto card to practise identifying the x26 initial Christmas-themed alphabet sounds. Learners match the initial sound for each image with the correct grapheme. A fun way for learners to practise their sound knowledge at Christmas.
This activity has been designed to be a simple, interactive, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning.
Whoâs it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as older students needing additional support with learning.

Whatâs included?
x6 sheets each with x5 picture/grapheme cards for all letters of the alphabet plus additional options for e/n - all Christmas themed. All sheets are portrait orientation, pdf format.
The alphabet cards are designed to be double-sided and used with a Function Machine. How to make a Function Machine is available as a resource to make yourself, following step-by-step instructions.
Whoâs it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as older students needing additional learning support.
Whatâs it for?
These cards have been designed to be cut out and made into double-sided cards for learners to practise identifying the initial sounds for x26 Christmas-themed images. Without a Function Machine these cards could be used by learners to self check - turning over the card to see if they were correct.
How to use it?
An adult prints these card shapes onto card and follows the instructions which are included on every page of the resource. In total x28 picture/grapheme cards are included. The set of (double-sided) cards can then be placed on a table top, positioned with a âFunction Machineâ for learners to use on their own or perhaps with adult support (initially).
Learners look at each image and say this out loud. Learners then verbally identify the initial sound of the word. E.g. for the âaâ card the learner would say âAdvent Calendarâ and then âaâ (for âAdventâ). Learners then post the card (image side up) and when it pops out of the Function Machineâs lower slot (grapheme side up) they can see if they were correct.
As an additional activity learners could order the cards alphabetically.
Resource DetailsâŠ
The pictures included use words with clear initial sounds. Some images/words may be completely new to learners - an opportunity to expand their vocabulary. E.g. âquinceâ may easily be presumed to be a âpearâ. For clarity all images are labelled on the back of every card.

This resource has been designed for pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support.
Resource Details
Page 1
This page has been designed to be the âbookâ itself. The top section is the front and back cover, the middle and lower section have been designed as the pages to go inside the book. Learners are to cut along âdottedâ lines on page 1 to create three separate strips - these are the âpagesâ of the book. Learners then stack these three pages together - with the âAll about me!â cover positioned at the front and fold along the âdashedâ lines. Learners can write their name on the line provided on the front cover before continuing with making their mini-book.
Next step - learners stick information (see pages 2 and 3) on front AND back of these pages to add more information to their âall about meâ mini-book.
Learners will each need a pencil, scissors and a glue stick. Adults may wish to âstapleâ the spine of these mini-books together (along the âdashed linesâ) once complete.
Pages 2 and 3.
These pages have been designed to be cut out as individual squares and completed by learners before being stuck into the prepared mini-book. Learners can choose which âsquares/pagesâ to include in their mini book - there are several to choose fromâŠ
Information for learners to complete includesâŠ
drawing a picture of themselves
writing the number for how old they are, drawing the correct number of candles onto a birthday cake to show this and recording in writing when their birthday is
writing or drawing and labelling something that they did during the summer holidays
colouring and writing the name of their favourite colour
drawing and labelling their favourite food (on a plate)
writing or drawing and labelling their favourite âthing to doâ
circling a sentence to indicate whether they have a pet/s (or not)

Whatâs included?
x2 sheets (x10 picture/CVC word cards) focusing on the âaâ sound. Both sheets are portrait orientation, pdf format. These cards are designed to be used with a Function Machine, but can be used without.
Whoâs it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as older students needing additional learning support.
Whatâs it for?
Learners can use these cards to practise sounding out simple CVC/CCVC (Phase 2/3 phonics) words.
This activity has been designed to be a simple, interactive, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for individuals to be getting on with independently.
With a Function Machine
Learners sound out the graphemes on one side of each card to read each word then push the card into the top function machine slot (word side facing up) and can see if they are correct when the picture pops out of the slot below (picture side up!)
Without a Function Machine
Learners sound out the graphemes on one side of each card to read each word then flip it over to see if they were correct - looking at the picture on the other side.
What is needed to make these?
x2 sheets of white A4 card (for the printer)
decent scissors
a metal ruler (for âscoringâ)
scoring tool (to help fold the card accurately)
a glue stick
How to use it?
An adult needs to print the sheets onto card and follow the instructions (included on both sheets) to make these cards double-sided/back-to-back.
The set of back-to-back cards can then be placed on a carpet/table top, for learners to use on their own/with adult support.
Phoneme âdotsâ have been included under every grapheme so that learners know how many sounds to say as they read (sound out) the words.
