6(a) The Mongol Expansion
This worksheet consists of an outline of the battle, a mix and match activity of key personnel and their role, completing a table with details about why the Mongols won and the Chin lost and writing a paragraph to Conn Iggulden's description of the start of the battle in Lords of the Bow. The activities are high on blood, gore and student engagement.
The Vietnam War affected all aspects of civilians' lives: urbanisation, increase in many diseases, pressures from the various governments, economic/financial problems and military atrocities. This source-based activity is designed for students of the NSW Modern History Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum.

This resource includes 3 separate primary sources from eyewitnesses to events in the topic Spartan society to the Battle of Leuctra 371 BCE and activities based on the source including who wrote the source, what we know about the writer, how their presence at the historical incidents impacts their writing, whether the information is reliable and the purpose of the writing. The 3 sources are:
+ Xenophon outlines the powers of the Spartan kings, c.370 BCE
+ Xenophon describes how Spartans educate girls, c.370 BCE
+ Pausanias visits the Acropolis of Sparta, c.170 CE
Each source and analysis questions are on a single page.

The outcome being developed is: AH11-6 analyses and interprets different types of sources for evidence to support an historical account or argument
Worksheet and answers for the documentary Why the Industrial Revolution Happened Here, presented by Professor Jeremy Black. Covers Britain in the 1700s, the Age of Reason leading to scientific and technological developments, the first industrial factories in Birmingham, support for innovation and technological development by the British Government, international trade, development of the British navy as a means to protect this trade, development of banks and the stock exchange, improvements in transport. There is a great example of Josiah Wedgwood's ceramics industry.
John Schumann's 'I Was Only 19' gives a narrative of a 19-year old conscript in the Australian Army in 1968-69, at the time of the Vietnam War. The song describes selection, training, experiences in Vietnam and reflections on the war after his return. The terms and concepts in the song are explained and are followed by a set of activities. The set of activities includes:
1. What did you learn about the experiences of Anzac soldiers at Gallipoli and after the war?
2. How did the song make feel? Why?
3. How does John Schumann use language and tone to help you feel this way?
4. Is the song for or against war? Why?
In 1916 an Australian mining battalion consisting of miners from the North Queensland goldmines, the Hunter Valley coalmines and the Broken Hill and northern Tasmanian mines set about breaking the stalemate on the Western Front by blowing up Hill 60, a German strong-point in Belgium. The film is an excellent depiction the contrasts of life of soldiers on both the Western Front and life on a homestead in North Queensland in 1916. This worksheet is designed for students of the NSW History K-10 Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum.

The Greek loss at Thermopylae bears many similarities with the Anzac loss at Gallipoli. Both sparked legends of heroics, remembrance events and a respect for a worthy enemy. Can students think of more examples? How exactly do military defeats become a matter of pride? Why does the same not apply to other defeats e.g. Singapore in 1942?
This is a source-based activity consisting of drawings, primary and secondary documentary evidence and a photograph of an archaeological find. Students examine the evidence to answer short-response questions. the last activity is to write a half-page report on the weapons Viking used in battle. This activity is designed for students of the NSW History K-10 Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum.

The Vikings
All migrations come down to push factors from the old country and pull factors to the new. It is the same with the Norwegian Vikings migrating to Iceland. This source-based task provides students with a variety of primary and secondary materials with which students can make their own decisions regarding why the Vikings settled Iceland. This resource includes a worksheet and answers to accompany the BBC documentary, Conquistadors: Episode 1 - The Fall of the Aztecs presented by Michael Wood. It covers the arrival of the first Spanish under Hernan Cortez, Cortez's journey to Tenochtitlan, conflict with the Aztecs under Montezuma and defeat of the Aztec forces.
The Warsaw Ghetto was a tragedy that even now defies belief. This source-based task uses primary and secondary sources to identify food and water shortages, inadequate shelter, brutalisation by Nazi soldiers, inadequate heating and the effects that these issues had on the Jewish inhabitants. Special focus is made on the impact of the vulnerable, notably children and the aged. This task is designed for students of the History K-10 Syllabus

Depth Study 6: The Holocaust
This worksheet and answers accompanies the SBS program First Australians Episode 7: We Are No Longer Shadows. It covers the life of Eddie Koiki Mabo's life and his struggle for the most essential civil right: the right for Indigenous Peoples in Australia to claim legal ownership over their traditional lands. His success in the High Court in 1992 court meant that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples could actually own their land and make decisions with regard to that land such as who can live on it and any economic activities related to the land. But it was also a tremendous moral victory to those who fought for ATSI civil rights. The worksheet is designed for students of the NSW History K-10 Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum.
