This fact finding worksheet is made up of 16 statements about the human and physical geography of Japan. Each statement has 1-3 blanks that the children have to fill in through either prior knowledge or researching on the internet or in books. The final part of the worksheet is a word search which contains many of the answers and other words too. It even has a hidden message that is only revealed when the children have found a certain number of words. The worksheet serves as a nice introduction to various facts about Japan and requires the children to think about what search terms to use to find the information they need effectively. I usually have the children work in pairs for this as they can bounce ideas off each other, discuss and divide the questions up between them. You could even provide a certain statement to each student and then have them share their findings at the end for others to record.

This colourful worksheet is made up of 5 addition word problems of increasing difficulty. For each problem, the children are expected to draw a bar model using the template provided and then show their workings and answer, again using a provided outline. The final question involves children creating their own word problem for their friend to try and solve using the same methodology, The worksheet works even better if accompanied with manipulatives such as Base 10 blocks. The LO is for the children to be able to solve addition based word problems with the help of bar models. The document is fully editable so names, numbers and questions can be changed to suit your children’s needs.

The Challenge This Code Breaker Challenge is made up of 4 challenge sheets, each containing three sets of questions about addition as well as an instruction section written in code. There is also a final challenge sheet for obtaining the master lock key. The Setup Ideally, the Code Breaker Challenge requires a box which can be locked with four three digit combination locks and one padlock. See the attached picture as an idea for the setup. It could however be done without this, but wouldn’t be quite as fun for the children. How to Use Fill the box with treasure, for example some sweets and then setup the combinations on each of the locks and lock the box with them and the master lock. Split the class up into four teams and provide each team with one of the challenge sheets. Start a timer of approximately 30 minutes (depending on the ability and age of your class). Each team works together to solve the challenge and tell the teacher the three digit code. If they got it correct, they may open their lock. If not, then they will need to check their answers. Once all four combination locks have been opened, or even after the first team has finished, provide the master lock challenge. If they complete it correctly and within the time, they can then have the master lock key to open the treasure box. Great Fun! The children absolutely love the Code Breaker Challenge and we repeat it at the end of every major maths unit. They really need to work together and check their work carefully if they are to succeed in opening the box and retrieving the treasure within. In this activity, children are expected to take an unknown board game called Minefield, figure out a way to play it and write the gaming instructions. The main board is provided with counters and peace signs. This works well as a team activity, as a lot of discussion needs to go into figuring out what the game play and any other equipment will be before the rules are written up. The children really loved this challenge, especially when they knew there were actually no right or wrong ways (or any way in existence) to play it. The main objective though is to try and design the game play in such a way that is both straight-forward, challenging and fun. Lots of critical thinking skills involved in the discussion stages of the activity. It’s amazing how many variants of how to play the game that the children come up with. Of course, in the end, they all get to play each others version and can decide themselves which one they enjoy the best. I hope your children love doing this activity as much as mine did!

This fun activity involves children using Google Earth to discover various famous landmarks from around the world. Examples include a mixture of man-made structures such as The Taj Mahal, and natural landmarks such as Ayre’s Rock. Children can ether type or copy the coordinates into Google Earth and then easily find the monument. Older students could even try to manually find the coordinates. Once there, they can explore the landmark following which they should record its name and country in the table. This could either work as an individual competition - see who can find all the places in the quickest time. Or it could be done as a collective effort - the whole class working to find the different places before the time runs out. It works as a great follow-up lesson to mapping and use of coordinates or even just as an introduction to Google Earth or an introduction to famous human and physical geographic landmarks.

This worksheet involves 10 shape patterns of increasing difficulty. Children have to discern the repeating unit and then fill in the missing shapes to complete the patterns. There are a mixture 2D and 3D shapes and most of the patterns involve rotation and colour changes. LO: I can identify patterns in sequences of shapes. I can complete missing sections of patterns in sequences of shapes. This worksheet is designed to be used online as a Google Doc but could also be printed, however some of the shapes would be difficult to replicate just through drawing. I use it in Google Classroom and create a copy for each of the children to work on.

This worksheet is made up of 2 parts. The first involves filling in the missing information for the table about the 8 planets in our solar system. Children will need to research and find the information using books and/or the internet. Please see the preview for further information about the groups of information required. The second part is a true or false activity with statements that directly relate to the information in the table. This is quite an extensive activity and children will need plenty of time to collate their research and fill it in correctly. It works well as a small group activity (2-3 children). The first part of this A3 board game document is based on Snakes and Ladders. The board is fully editable, with the ability to type in the spaces as well as move around the snakes and ladders. The second part of the document contains the same board, but this time with question mark spaces and fully editable question cards to use with it. This way, the board game can be used in a variety of different subjects. Children really love using the board games to review topics. I’ve used it in English, science and maths as well as other subjects. The ability to answer a question allows the student to roll the die again and the snakes and ladders add that extra element of fun and luck to the game. Children can use anything as counters in the game. We usually have a mishmash of coins, pencil sharpeners and erasers. As you can see from the preview, the board game itself is very colourful. This worksheet serves as a colourful introduction to the different methods of food preservation. It is a diagram showing the first letters of different ways of food preservation along with picture prompts. Discuss and elicit the methods from individuals or groups in the class. The answers are provided on the second page. They are… Freezing, refrigerating, drying or dehydrating, vacuum-packing, salting or curing, pickling, canning or jarring and smoking. This simple worksheet involves children colouring in the paths of both the odd and even numbers. There is more than one route to follow for each but also several dead ends, so it’s important children plan properly before committing to colouring the squares in. It serves as a fun way to reinforce and check the children’s ability to understand odd and even numbers. It also allows chance to easily circulate as they colour to further check understanding.

This colourful A3 board game is fully editable. You can change the contents of any of any square on the board. There are so many ways you an adapt this for different lessons. Here are a few examples… a) Maths Write calculations in each box for the children to solve b) Reading Write tricky phonics words or as I have done with this other uploads on here, write word endings and beginnings. You could also have the children use the word in context in a sentence or explain its definition etc. c) Science Write questions relating to your topic in the box, or add in question spaces where children have to pick up a card with a question on. You could even get the class to create their own question cards. All you need for the game is a dice and between 2-5 players. Each of the ideas above follow the same style game play. That is, if you are able to solve the problems or read the words in the space you land on, then you are able to remain there. If not, then you go back to where you were before you rolled. You can also get creative and add in your own special spaces such as miss a go or roll again. Or you can get really creative and add in special reasons. For example, you helped a friend in need, move forward four spaces, or you fell off your bike and broke your head, miss a go. etc.
