A full work-through for an experiment on mummifying an apple. Includes the full scientific method from hypothesis through to conclusion. Great to get some science into a topic about Ancient Egypt. I usually begin the experiment so that a month or so later, it coincides with a look at the mummification process. We also create an Adobe Spark video to explain the way the Egyptians made their mummies. Extra discussion prompts: What foods to we preserve? How and why do we preserve them? How is this similar to the process of mummification?

This fact finding worksheet is made up of 16 statements about the human and physical geography of Japan. Each statement has 1-3 blanks that the children have to fill in through either prior knowledge or researching on the internet or in books. The final part of the worksheet is a word search which contains many of the answers and other words too. It even has a hidden message that is only revealed when the children have found a certain number of words. The worksheet serves as a nice introduction to various facts about Japan and requires the children to think about what search terms to use to find the information they need effectively. I usually have the children work in pairs for this as they can bounce ideas off each other, discuss and divide the questions up between them. You could even provide a certain statement to each student and then have them share their findings at the end for others to record.

This fun activity involves children using Google Earth to find a variety of places or things around the world. They aren’t specific places per se, but generally places. Examples include a football stadium, cactus, iceberg etc. The idea of having generic places and things to find is that the children generally aren’t able to just do a text search. They have to actively seek and find! Children can either using a snipping tool or PrtSc (Print Screen) to save a picture of the place/thing or they could provide the coordinates of their find. This could either work as an individual competition - see who can find all the places in the quickest time. Or it could be done as a collective effort - the whole class working to find the different places before the time runs out. I hope your children enjoy it as much as mine did!

Each coordinate leads to a different letter. Once the children have recorded the letter, they can zoom out to find out and record what country it is in. Once they have all the letters, they have to rearrange them to make up the mystery word. You can see all the answers by selecting the text in both the country and letter columns and changing the text colour. They are hidden in plain sight, so don’t forget to remove them if you are setting this as a document online. This could either work as an individual competition - see who can find all the places in the quickest time. This is a spinning wheel which is made of two parts, an top wheel which has a window and a door and a bottom wheel which has the questions and answers on respectively. Instructions: a) Print out the template on card. b) Children then write an operation, for example, 3x6 in the inner section, and write the answer in the outer section. Complete each part of the pie with other operations. c) Cut out the sections of other top wheel except the dotted line which will be a fold for the door. (You may need a cuter or Stanley knife for this). d) Use a push pin to attach the wheels together so they will spin. Decorate the wheels and then cut out. Usage: With the little flap door closed, spin or turn the top wheel to reveal an operation. Try and answer it before opening the flap to reveal the correct answer. *I usually use this for children to review a the more difficult of the timestables but it could be adapted for other short question and answers that require a bit of rote learning. It just makes it all that more fun to do. *

This worksheet comprises two parts. The first is a fill in the blanks section where ideally the children test objects using a light source and fill in with the help of the words from the table. The second part can also involve some testing done throughout the day or could be done after the fact. It involves drawing where the sun would be at different times of the day and then drawing an object and its corresponding shadow. Children learn about the ways that a shadow can be affected and how and relate it to the shadows of objects caused by everyday objects blocking light from the sun. As an extra fun activity, have the children draw around their own shadows at different points during the day. This is the electronic take on the classic memory game and it’s fully editable! Just add in pairs (or groups) of words for matching up. Best to be projected in front of the class and have two teams compete. There are 24 numbered tiles that reveal the words underneath when clicked on. I’ve also included one click scoring systems (with a max 12 points for each of the two teams) as well as a hide and reveal all button. This is great for reinforcing new vocabulary but can also be used for anything which can be split into two parts. For example, a word cut in half, a word and definition, a word and picture, a verb and its past tense form, synonyms or even a maths calculation and answer. There are so many different possibilities! It’s also good point for introducing locational memory strategies and mnemonics.

This worksheet involves questions that relate to the text of Pie Corbett’s Storm Unicorn. The questions cover basic recall and then move onto more advanced comprehension skills such as inference. The final section leaves a space for the children to attempt to draw the Storm Unicorn based on the details of the report. It encourages children to think flexibly and relates the plight of the unicorn with that of rhino’s. It also opens up a wealth of discussion surrounding that point too. I usually use this after the children have read, mapped and analysed the report in detail first.
