To engage a challenging class in English studies, I made use of the Troll Hunters series on Netflix and linked it to the skills and knowledge they required for their assessment tasks. The unit specifically focused on Genres and this series incorporates a number of genres and English language techniques (such as allegory, metaphor, foreshadowing, allusion etc) as well as great vocabulary. A full SACE Stage 1 Integrated Learning Unit, including LAP, assessment task sheets, and assessment scaffolds. Theme was to develop certain life skills in young adults. Purpose: To demonstrate students’ development in TWO of the core skills of organisation, communication, research, and digital literacy. Task Description: Students develop a portfolio of evidence showing their abilities to complete certain tasks that make use of the aforementioned skills. These tasks include: • Creating budgets • Timetables • Presentations • Editing documents • Digital file organisation • Communication • Digital research Skills are initially tested early in the term and then students build their competency and show their development by the end of Term 3.
