This delivers great short story writing results for upper KS2, because this photo story includes a scaffold frame to support weaker writers to get good story writing results. It also includes a popular visual stimulus and a story start. It also includes a vocabulary building sheet to develop the vocabulary of the most able. I started the task by watching Steve Backshall's Shark Bites - very short CBBC programmes on sharks, including the Great White. Next, I read the extract from Anthony Horowitz's Skeleton Key where Alex Rider came in contact with a shark and discussed how the writer uses description of the character's feelings as well as description of the shark to build suspense. The worksheet of vocabulary can be used to model an effective noun phrase and sentence to describe the shark as a speaking and listening, or guided writing task. The story starts with a diver swimming next to a tiger shark and everything is calm. Next, he notices the shadow of a great white approaching. The pupils need to finish this story start. I suggested that the story ends with the diver getting away from the shark. The children that need more support could work with the scaffold frame for guided story writing to structure their work and show how feelings and description are required to build suspense. We also listened to 'Jaws' music from John Williams.

Children will be excited by designing their dream beach hotel advert, with features like scuba diving and pools. There is a model text of a beach holiday brochure advert for a hotel, written to demonstrate genre features and to highlight the use of persuasive techniques. The comprehensive teaching notes explain the genre features to inform and to persuade. The notes draw attention to features of the model text, like fact and opinion and the use of a variety of sentence starts. The notes make suggestions for guided and independent writing and the scaffold frame offers additional support. The scaffold results in great writing and the pupils get a clear understanding of the features of the text type.

These are just some book discussion ideas used to challenge Upper KS2. The book talk looked for evidence that the book is a comedy, evidence that the book is about a tryanny and evidence of themes. We also discussed our likes and dislikes and words we felt described the book. We also looked at words used by reviewers to describe Wed Wabbit and decided if we did, or did not agree with their opinion . There are examples of the response to the topics by a child included as a model. There are also blank sheets for pupils to fill in their own discussion ideas. The words that have been used by critics to describe the book to promote discussion is also included.

Fun task for summer and pupils can produce good written work! Pupils write instructions for a favourite ice cream and an advert for an ice cream or ice cream shop. There is a wordbank to support pupils who need support, taken from collecting ideas of favourite flavours and toppings from pupils. There are also instructions establishing how to write instructions to make an ice cream sundae. Next, there is a PowerPoint about how to write an ice cream advert. There is a worksheet for children requiring additional support on naming and adding adjectives to ice creams. Children can produce their own advert (either for an ice cream cafe or an individual ice cream) and there are a choice of sheets with a pictures of ice cream provided, if you want to use that for pupils to present their work.

This fun PowerPoint teaches children about persuasive techniques, using images and animations to make the ideas memorable and easy to remember. It aids pupils’ persuasive writing, but also gives pupils a new set of glasses with which they can make them more aware of the techniques used in persuasive media. It covers the use of persuasive techniques like appealing adjectives, catchy slogans, second person, imperative verbs, positive connotations and blinding with science. It is an ideal preparation for writing adverts, or brochures. It teaches that persuasive texts are consciously put together and constructed to achieve a purpose.

Learning outcomes - children learn about global warming and by using the model text, teaching notes and scaffold are able to write their own persuasive and informative texts on global warming. A model global warming persuasive information text provides lots of information, so children will learn about global warming. Teaching notes provide guidance on the features of the text type. Teaching notes also guide discussion of how the writer manages to persuade and inform. This builds the children’s understanding of the text type in order to help pupils write their own persuasive and informative texts on global warming. There is a scaffold frame that can also be used to support independent writing on global warming.

This is a free sample of a Word a Day resource that I have made with over 600 words. The bought resource is a big enough word a day collection for 3 and a half school years. There is a related picture and synonym to aid comprehension. I hope it will be a way for whole schools to increase the vocabulary of their pupils, through use in lessons, newsletters or assemblies. Aimed at KS3, KS4 and KS5 but the word a day may also have some application with able pupils in upper KS2.
