This lesson introduces learners to inflation and interest rates - economic influences is quite a large topic area to cover so it is split into two parts. We start by looking at some shocking (for students) price changes in the last few decades before looking at how inflation is calculated and the implications on businesses and concumsers. We then go onto looking at interest rates and again, implications on consumers and businesses. This lesson introduces learners to the contents and purpose of a business plan, we discuss the sections of a plan, we then go on to look at an infamous example of what it shouldn’t be like in Solomon’s plan presented to Claude Littner in the Apprentice. A 3 mark question with a model answer, a few short tasks before going onto creating a business plan in groups, a template has been provided. Students present back their plans to the class and the class are provided with a sheet to write WWW and EBI with their peers presentations. This lesson introduces learners to budgeting, we start by looking at the purpose and types of budgets before moving onto variance analysis. An example calculation is demonstrated before students attempt a 4 mark exam style calculation question - answer is provided as well as an extra student answer for the class to identify where marks are given. We then look at a fictional case study on Meerkat who has decided to leave ‘compare the market’. A 12 mark exam style question on the usefulness of variance analysis with structure guidance and concise model answer is provided. Three lessons here to introduces learner to the impact of multinational companies, we start by looking at Nike as a MNC, then go on to look at Foxconn (usually a company students haven’t heard of until they realise all their electronics are made there). We look at the pros and cons of MNCs, then go on to read a concise case study on a proposed Dam project by two MNCs in Chile which is met with protests. Structure guidance is given and a model answer to help students with peer assessment and exam technique development. In the third lesson, we look at GlaxoSmithKline and their role in developing the economies of Africa, a case study showing how they have invested and what their committments are is looked at and disucssed, students have a debate task for and against the effects of GSK on Africa, this is in a 12 mark question form too with a concise model answer to compare debate points with.
