This lesson contains plenty of problem solving and reasoning tasks which will prepare all pupils for the 9-1 curriculum. It gives pupils plenty of time to master the skill but then become fluent in using and applying. All tasks are differentiated between 2 and 4 levels to gives all pupils a chance of accessing this lesson. There are solutions to every task to ensure it is easy to self assess. Used with a year 7 class who enjoyed this lesson and encouraged lots of discussion.

Pupils are given this worksheet which has 6 different calculations on. It is coloured so each coloured is a different stage of working out Blue - Question Yellow - Stage 1 Red - Stage 2 Green - Solution It models how the pupils should be setting out this question in order for future questions. Pupils have been engaged with this and has worked well with revision and on a poster for pupils. Colours can be removed for the more able students

A Thoughts and Crosses on using and applying the nth term of an arithmetic sequence. Does not go into too much detail such as from a diagram ect but a nice end of topic assessment to see what have been learnt. It is differentiated 4 ways and also each specific row gets more difficult as you go along it so each question offers a different challenge. Pupils always engaged when using this activity and can be used in exercise books or as an assessment poster task

The lesson ensures that there is plenty of opportunity to practice the skill with a differentiated thoughts and crosses to allow pupils to work at their desired level. There are then plenty of money, shape and worded problems to allow the pupils to explore estimation in context. There are also reasoning tasks regarding estimation to help pupils fully explore the topic. This lesson contains plenty of problem solving and reasoning tasks which will prepare all pupils for the 9-1 curriculum. This is a series of lessons on finding the area of a rectangle. It starts off very basic by finding them by counting squares. However it moves onto finding the area and then onto compound shapes to allow children to develop their knowledge. It then has a series of functional problems and also problem solving questions to make such a basic topic extremely challenging for all pupils. The are some more vague concepts to really challenge the pupils. All tasks are differentiated, 2-4 levels for each task to make it accessible to all pupils but also to stretch the more able. All tasks have full solutions to it is easy to peer and self assess during the lesson. The lesson includes reasoning and problem solving tasks which ensure that this is suitable for the 9-1 GCSE curriculum. I have used this lesson and pupils were engaged yet challenged.

There are then problem solving questions linking triangles and rectangles.
