The 'Is Not' Poem KS4

(0)
A one lesson resource for simply creating a piece of poetry. Using the idea of describing something by what it isn’t, learners can build up a collection of ideas which will convert into lines that they can edit and refine into a poem. The technique, once learned can be used to create other poems. Learners are given a simple concept such as a book or a car to describe in terms of what it isn’t. More complex work can be achieved by using broader concepts such as learning to drive or planting a tree, or something that uses characters with occupations and locations, for example the Watchmaker. working this way responds to a common habit people have of answering in the negative. Q What would you like to eat? A I don’t want pizza again and I don’t want a baked potato. We do this a lot! The lesson is suitable for all as learners can choose how complex they want their idea to be and can build the work with a series of ideas that resonate with them.

The 'Is Not' Poem KS2

(0)
A poem that is easy to compile, aimed at KS2 learners to build on previous poetry lessons. Can work with whole class as it can be made simple or complex. the resource consists of a lesson plan for an hour. Some initial discussion and instruction comes ahead of 40 minutes of writing and experimenting with the form. There’s time at the end of class for people to read their work aloud if they wish. The Is Not poem asks learners to create poetic lines based on what their chosen subject isn’t. The resulting poem should still make the subject matter clear. The technique mirrors a habit people use ll the time, which is answering in the negative. For example - Q What games do you want at your party? A Well, I don’t want Monopoly as everyone cheated last time and I don’t want karaoke as no one can sing. People do this all the time! Use the technique to help young minds build images from negatives.
