A poem that is easy to compile, aimed at KS2 learners to build on previous poetry lessons. Can work with whole class as it can be made simple or complex. the resource consists of a lesson plan for an hour. Some initial discussion and instruction comes ahead of 40 minutes of writing and experimenting with the form. There’s time at the end of class for people to read their work aloud if they wish.
The Is Not poem asks learners to create poetic lines based on what their chosen subject isn’t. The resulting poem should still make the subject matter clear.
The technique mirrors a habit people use ll the time, which is answering in the negative. For example -
Q What games do you want at your party?
A Well, I don’t want Monopoly as everyone cheated last time and I don’t want karaoke as no one can sing.
People do this all the time!
Use the technique to help young minds build images from negatives.
