By examining the latest promotional material for upcoming films, learners will consider how stories are constructed and how trailers persuade audiences to watch films on the big screen. Through this resource, pupils will develop their oracy skills using a range of trailers as stimulus material. All the activities in the resource offer opportunities for exploratory talk, discussion and presentation. Additionally, there are extension tasks to support the learning of new vocabulary and the development of new skills, including media literacy. The resource can also be used to complement learning in a range of subjects including English/literacy and communication, expressive arts, music, art and drama with specialised slides for media and film qualifications. Teachers might also want to dip into the resource for tutor time and PSHE/health and wellbeing. Talking About Trailers offers flexibility, allowing teachers freedom to choose their focus, the number of tasks to complete and the duration of the activity. Chosen from among 8 billion people to be Earth’s leader, Elio must become an unlikely hero and work alongside the planet leaders of the Communiverse. This interactive, oracy- and citizenship-focused resource, brought to you by Into Film, Disney and Pixar to celebrate the upcoming cinematic release of Elio, develops connection and leadership skills through the exploration of imaginary planets and their leaders. Just as Elio comes to find his place in the universe, your pupils will explore techniques for building connections and making new friends while thinking about the skills and qualities that characterise leadership – and why being part of a team of leaders can be important. Learners will also reflect on the benefits of living on planet Earth and by combining their scientific knowledge with creativity, design their own new planet. Using persuasive language and oracy skills, each pupil in your class will create and deliver a presentation promoting their planet. This will be followed by class evaluations of each campaign and a vote to determine which planet would be the best place to live. Inspire your learners’ imaginations as you explore the rich world of How to Train Your Dragon. In lesson one, learners will be asked to put their sense of hearing to the test as they first listen to the trailer without any visuals. Based on what they’ve heard, learners will be asked to deduce what the film is about and explain what they think the characters, dragons and landscapes will look like. They will then get the chance to see the full trailer with both sound and visuals on and be asked to reflect on whether what they saw matched up to what they imagined. Following this, learners will reflect on Viking culture and how we see the Vikings depicted in the trailer. Learners will be given several leadership characteristics and be asked to rank them from most important to least important, first from the perspective of Stoick and then from the perspective of Hiccup. Pupils will be encouraged to empathise with Hiccup by completing a role on the wall for his character, writing down all the things we know about him based on the trailer and then deducing Hiccup’s feeling and inner characteristics. The home learning activity will task learners to create a motivational poster to encourage Hiccup to be true to himself. Lesson two will use the world ofHow to Train Your Dragon to inspire creative writing. Learners will immerse themselves in the trailer again, this time imagining what they might be able to hear, see, taste, smell and touch in this world. Then learners will take the ‘daring dragon’ challenge by entrusting their peers to choose the ‘ingredients’ for their story based on a range of options. Pupils will be given help to plan and structure their stories, before writing up their final copy. The lesson will end with the opportunity for pupils to share their stories and self-assess the strengths and weaknesses of their work.

This resource will immerse the class in the world of Disney Snow White using the enchanted forest as a stimulus to learn about habitats and the different creatures that make the woods their home. With links to both the Science and Maths curriculums, the Woodland Wonders activity sheet will guide learners through the mysterious world of the forest. This resource immerses the class in the world of Disney’s Moana 2 using sounds and music as stimuli to learn about the main characters in the film and allow learners to demonstrate and develop their musical abilities using collaborative, creative and fun activities while drawing on rhythmic concepts and styles. With links to both the music and KS1 maths curriculums, the Bring the Beat activity sheet first guides learners through the profiles of the characters, who have been assigned a particular musical sound, which can be recreated through body percussion. Learners then work individually to decode a pattern of character images on the activity sheet into a series of sounds, creating a musical sequence that can be performed to the class. In addition, they can identify and extend the pattern of sounds in each sequence. Working in groups where appropriate, learners also devise their own musical key with a new set of images and corresponding sounds, allowing them to make a new musical sequence and create their own repeating body percussion pattern. This can then be performed to the class as they try to guess what sound comes next in the sequence.
