This resource will immerse the class in the world of Disney Snow White using the enchanted forest as a stimulus to learn about habitats and the different creatures that make the woods their home. With links to both the Science and Maths curriculums, the Woodland Wonders activity sheet will guide learners through the mysterious world of the forest. Learners will follow a path through the woodland, discovering different habitats on their way. They will fill in the missing words in the descriptions to demonstrate their understanding of the different forest habitats. Learners will then complete symmetric figures to reveal the animals that live in the woodland habitats. Our optional competition will invite learners to reflect on what they might look like at their best and bravest. The prompts on the Mirror Me competition sheet will encourage pupils to think about how body language, clothes, accessories, and other people can contribute to the feeling, and projection, of bravery. Learners will use their creativity and drawing skills to create a picture of themselves looking brave and write a short paragraph explaining their design choices.

How to Train Your Dragon: Beyond Boundaries

(0)
Inspire your learners’ imaginations as you explore the rich world of How to Train Your Dragon. In lesson one, learners will be asked to put their sense of hearing to the test as they first listen to the trailer without any visuals. Based on what they’ve heard, learners will be asked to deduce what the film is about and explain what they think the characters, dragons and landscapes will look like. They will then get the chance to see the full trailer with both sound and visuals on and be asked to reflect on whether what they saw matched up to what they imagined. Following this, learners will reflect on Viking culture and how we see the Vikings depicted in the trailer. Learners will be given several leadership characteristics and be asked to rank them from most important to least important, first from the perspective of Stoick and then from the perspective of Hiccup. Pupils will be encouraged to empathise with Hiccup by completing a role on the wall for his character, writing down all the things we know about him based on the trailer and then deducing Hiccup’s feeling and inner characteristics. The home learning activity will task learners to create a motivational poster to encourage Hiccup to be true to himself. Lesson two will use the world ofHow to Train Your Dragon to inspire creative writing. Learners will immerse themselves in the trailer again, this time imagining what they might be able to hear, see, taste, smell and touch in this world. Then learners will take the ‘daring dragon’ challenge by entrusting their peers to choose the ‘ingredients’ for their story based on a range of options. Pupils will be given help to plan and structure their stories, before writing up their final copy. The lesson will end with the opportunity for pupils to share their stories and self-assess the strengths and weaknesses of their work.

Climate Change Across the Curriculum

Climate Change Across the Curriculum uses film to help secondary school teachers integrate climate education across subjects, including science, D&T, maths, and English. The resource aligns with the National Curriculum ensuring that climate change is explored in a relevant and interdisciplinary way. This climate change resource provides content for two themed lessons: one on Fashion and one on transport. The lessons explore how these industries operate and the negative impact that they have on the environment. Using a variety of feature films, short films and archival footage as stimuli for discussion, students will be encouraged to share their thoughts and suggestions for a more positive future. Fashion and the environment In this lesson, students explore the environmental impact of the fashion industry, including the concept of ‘fast fashion’. Through curated highlights, they will consider textile consumption and ways to reduce fashion’s climate impact. The session offers two activities: a presentation on sustainable fashion efforts and a creative task on repurposing clothes. Educators can choose the most suitable activity or incorporate both into a longer unit. Transport and the environment In this lesson, students will examine the environmental impact of travel, considering different transport methods and their carbon footprints. A maths challenge involves calculating emissions from a school commute, followed by a choice of two activities: a literacy task writing a letter on reducing carbon footprints or a creative task developing a short film inspired by archive footage. Teachers can choose the most suitable activity, or incorporate both. Beyond the two lessons, the resource also includes a ‘Take Action’ pack for students - a detailed guide for those interested in learning more about climate change and taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint.
