I set this for my low-ability year 7 class just before the half-term break (holiday homework!), but you can use this lesson at any point throughout the term. A lesson that introduces book reviews and provides students with a checklist for writing their own. The worksheet helps students understand how to structure their review. Enjoy!

Student Council and myself ran an event for IWD this week and this is the resource that I made for all form tutors to deliver during form time. Feel free to use; a great resource for a great day.

In my opinion, language paper 2 is the most BORING of all the GCSE. In introducing this unit to my mixed ability year 9 class, I decided to take a more relevant and engaging approach. These 4-5 lessons examine the ideas and issues brought to the fore by the wonderful David Attenborough, in his recent 2019 speech at the premiere of the Our Planet series. Find included: An introduction to the issues of climate change Debate and discussion topics, grounding this topic in contemporary social and global issues Highly structured activities that fascilitate students’ skills for Q1, 2 and 3 of this paper Self marking activities Videos and multimedia resources Transcripts of Attenborough’s speech, and Margaret Thatcher’s 1990 climate speech (for comparison for Q2), with guided annotations. Proud of this- English teachers don’t just teach how to read and write. We teach kids how to THINK and be critical. Enjoy!

A scheme of work with 15 lessons, all power-points, resources and activities included. I created this for my year high ability year 7 class- is suitable for KS3 or low ability KS4. Myths and legends covered include: Prometheus, Pandora’s Box, Hercules, Perseus, Beowulf, Medusa and the Canterbury Tales. Skills are focused around identifying language techniques and writing both critically and creatively, while understanding the role of myth storytelling in human literary history. I’ve also included a termly homework project.

My year 7s are about to undertake a poetry unit, and so I thought I'd share my first two lessons. Lesson one covers form, structure and language with related activities. Lesson two looks at meaning in the poem "The Word Party" which is a great introduction poem for little newbies. Happy new year everyone!

My year 7s are studying non-fiction at the moment, which I personally find very boring! To spice things up, we’ve been looking at non-fiction textual forms through the theme of comic books (see my other lessons for examples). This lesson/2 lessons examines the features of speeches, with examples being the grand speeches comic villains perform. Included: Two clips of Ego and Bane- why are their speeches convincing? Analysis activities for the Joker’s speech from The Dark Knight Model critical paragraph Creative: students write their own villain speech Extension: Students create a comic page featuring their villain and given speech. A lesson for a mixed ability KS3 class, analysing the short story form and Hemingway’s application of the “Icerbeg Theory”. Powerpoint and resources for KS3 poetry unit, introducing language forms and features

An introduction scheme of work (all powerpoints and worksheets for lessons included) to print and visual media for KS3. Activities/topics covered include: Newspaper articles, camera angles, lighting, advertisements and sexism in the media.

For the GCSE paper Language Paper 2 (Non-fiction), this lesson facilitates students' development of summary writing skills (Q2 of the exam). Ideal for a weaker class- visual clips of Wonderwoman and Guardians of the Galaxy make the material more accessible, with other written non-fiction texts the focus for the latter part of the lesson.

This is a single lesson that I designed for my year 13 class. Looking at an extract from "A Study in Scarlet" by Arthur Conan Doyle, students consider the dimensions of Sherlock's character and why he is enduring. A puzzle activity merges analytical skills with group work. Can be taught with able groups of younger years, and as a general one- off for students already studying crime fiction/detective fiction.

This brief workshop introduces students to the basic forms of narrative perspective (first, second, third-limited and third-omniscient). Included are a few identification activities and tricks and tips for writing in perspective well.

The introduction lessons (or two) to the GCSE poem "Tissue" by Imtiaz Dharker. An guided annotation dissects language features and ideas in this challenging poem. Follow up lesson to come!

A fun 2-3 lessons that introduce students to the structure and form of feature articles. Builds to a task where they write their own feature article as Lois Lane, on the topic of Does the world really need superman? Included in this pack is an original model text of a feature article, written by yours truly :) My class had a lot of fun with this. Enjoy!
