Probabilities: Independent Events Digital Lesson and Activities for KS3
In statistics and probability, independent events are those occurrences that are not influenced by other events. This means that the outcome of one event has no effect on the outcome of another event. For example, the flip of a coin and the roll of a die are independent events because the outcome of one does not affect the outcome of the other.
To understand the concept of independent events, it can be helpful to use an interactive lesson or activity. For example, you could have your class conduct a probability experiment where they flip a coin and roll a die multiple times, and record the results in a table. As they do this, they can observe that the outcome of the coin flip does not affect the outcome of the die roll, and vice versa.
Once your learners understand the concept of independent events, you can introduce them to the rule of product. This rule is used to calculate the probability of multiple independent events occurring. For example, if the probability of event A occurring is 1/2, and the probability of event B occurring is 1/3, the probability of both A and B occurring is 1/2 * 1/3 = 1/6.
By teaching your learners about independent events and the rule of product, you can help them develop a stronger understanding of probability and its applications in the real world.
How to Calculate probabilities learning objectives:
understand that probability is given on a scale of 0-1;
be able to write probability as fractions, decimals and sometimes as percentages;
calculate probability of single events;
review the use of listings, tables and tree diagrams to calculate the probability of two or more events.
Teachers can use the lesson for whole class teaching and learners can also use it at home to practice at home.
