Functions and inverse functions

(9)
A worksheet intended as a plenary to check understanding of function machines, and the order of operations implicit within equations. A short check on the understanding of inverse operations is included. This worksheet should take around 10 minutes for students to complete.

The four operations: practice with integers, fractions, decimals, surds, algebraic terms

(1)
This worksheet is a good starter activity, or the basis of a longer lesson. The key aim is to apply a consistent understanding of each of the four operations; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, regardless of the topic area. For addition, subtraction and division, the 'denomination' of each term needs to be the same. For example; 4a + 2a, 4a - 2a, and 4a / 2a are all straight forward provided we understand that + means 'get some more', - means 'take some away' and divide means 'put into groups of... or piles of'. For multiplication, we can use 'logical language'; eg 2a x 3b = 6ab hence 2 'root3' x 3 'root 5' = 6 'root 3' 'root 5', which of course can be simplified to 6 'root 15'. Further explanation of this approach to the four operations is provided in the Maths 'Help Booklet' which I have authored and is available for free from the TES site.

Vector Geometry and Analysis homework or revision resource
silvestertimsilvestertim

Vector Geometry and Analysis homework or revision resource

(0)
This resource is accompanied by an answer document. It is aimed at students who have been taught to understand vector geometry and vector analysis. Students are required to work with column vectors and vectors expressed using letter notation, to understand parallel and perpendicular vectors, to calculate lengths and angles between vectors, to express unit vectors, and to apply an understanding of vectors within a range of geometric contexts. A grading system based on the new GCSE specification is suggested, but this resource would be equally useful in the US. The paper can be printed onto a single A3 folded sheet and there are a total of 60 marks. It can be used as a homework or a revision resource, or to assess general understanding at the end of the topic with plenty of extension and differentiated content available.

Bearings
silvestertimsilvestertim

Bearings

(0)
This is a series of 6 pages that can be printed as an A3 folded booklet for teaching students how to work out bearings. The first page provides a starter which revisits key angle facts based on parallel lines and a transversal, and based on angles on a straight line, at a point and in a triangle. The second page presents the key learning objectives and a section in which notes can be written. This is followed by a simple Task 1 of using bearings diagrams to work out the bearings of one point from another point using angle calculations, rather than scale drawing. Task 2 then requires students to draw diagrams first based on the information provided, and then to work out the required bearing. The lesson sits comfortable in an hour lesson with time for a plenary.

The problems include work on basic column vectors, fractional and negative scale factors, combinations of transformations, an understanding of congruent and similar shapes, and construction of rotations involving other angles.

(0)
This resource is accompanied by an answer document. It is aimed at students who have been taught to simplify expressions involving surd form, to convert decimals from and to standard form, and to apply the rules of indices. Applied contexts in the paper include work on prime factor decomposition, application of Pythagoras where lengths are expressed in surd form, and some algebraic applications including completing the square.

Maths: 12 Foundation Statistics and Number assignments

(0)
This is a series of 12 Foundation homework or revision assignments. They are designed to be used in conjunction with my excel, 'Monitoring' document which allows for all results from the Statistics, Pure and Geometry series to be recorded. These foundation papers are aimed at low to middle ability students. The set can alternatively be purchased to include both Foundation and Higher (for middle to high ability students) versions. They are designed for the new GCSE specification in the UK, and would suit any students within the same age range in other countries. This first series focuses on Statistics and Number. They are easy to mark and provide excellent feedback (the monitoring document allows for results in key topic areas to be analysed, as well as progression as students improve their knowledge and understanding. These assignments have led to sustained improvement of Mathematics results in the College in which the author teaches with students excelling at every ability range.
