A lesson aimed at Upper KS2 on the effects of the coal mining industry in Swansea. Used as part of the Cornerstones topic ‘Fire, Damp and Davy Lamps’ this lesson was successfully delivered in an Ofsted inspection with positive praise about this lesson given by inspectors.

A series of lessons designed to encourage children to learn about the story of Oliver Twist, starting with experience lessons with drama, followed by scaffolded lessons using the Write Stuff approach and concluding with their own stories for independent writing. Ideal for a Year 5 or 6 cohort.

The first week in a two week unit focusing on the film “The Alchemist’s Letter”. Each lesson provides guided writing opportunities to describe a scene, explore character’s emotions and explain how the machine works using drama and images. This then leads on to a second week (coming soon) where children explore two of the character’s memories, add their own happy memory to the machine and then explore morals before editting and refining. Aimed at Year 5 but can easily be used with a Year 6 class also.

This was a really early resource I made before starting university when I was helping in a year 7 History class. Can be used as a quick starter activity to refresh children’s memories of previous lessons or used at the end of a lesson to summarise certain words and terms they have learnt that day.
