NATURAL DISASTERS (ESL): Speaking, Reading and Writing Practice

Mini ESL unit about natural disasters. Students will discuss in pairs and as a class with two different speaking activities. They will learn 20 different types of natural disasters. Two reading activities with comprehension questions about earthquakes and floods are then followed by a writing task. â–șLEARNING OUTCOMES◄ Students will learn plenty of new vocabulary words through engaging and challenging activities. They will work individually, in pairs or in small groups to include variety in lesson dynamics. While studying this mini unit, they will get their juices flowing while discussing about reasons behind natural disasters and what can be done to solve them. They will also learn about earthquakes and floods around the world through gap filling activities and a number of comprehension questions. They will, then, engage in descriptive piece of writing to describe a possible catastrophic scenario. The unit will be concluded with a revision crossword which will bring them back to the very first activity to review the vocabulary words learned in it. â–șTABLE OF CONTENTS◄ 1. Cover page 2. Mini ESL unit about summer holidays and tropical destinations. It includes 5 reading passages about summer holiday destination (Mauritius, Fiji, Tenerife, Greece, Madagascar). Students will read but also solve vocabulary puzzles and write postcards. Very engaging but also full of content. â–șLEARNING OUTCOMES◄ GENERAL: Students will learn plenty of new vocabulary words through engaging and challenging activities. They will work individually, in pairs or in small groups to include variety in lesson dynamics. SPECIFIC: This mini unit is all about spectacular holiday destination. The 5 articles are about Mauritius, Fiji, Tenerife, Greece and Madacascar. Students will learn about tourist attractions and the beauties of such places. They will engage in 5 different activities to learn new vocabulary words. After that they will write postcards. I have organized my class into 5 teams around 5 stations, having one article each. Students had between 10 to 15 minutes to complete one task before moving to the next stations.
