A series of five information sheets about various aspects of Victorian history which are linked to elements within the gothic genre. These can used to provide some social and historical context to the study of any Victorian gothic text. Topics include Jack the Ripper, Body Snatchers and Bedlam Asylum.

Lessons focusing on the first 8 chapters of the novel including plot, character and themes.

A fully adaptable action plan aimed at preparing Year 11 for their GCSE exams. Using the theme of a military operation briefing, there is space to provide details of previous assessments, group targets and individual targets as well as space for dates of mock and external exams. A useful way of focusing Y11s on what they need to do in order to succeed. Originally devised as a resource for GCSE English, but could be adapted for any subject or any year group. Resource includes a Publisher and a Powerpoint version with both a partially completed example and a completely blank one for you to personalise. I've also included a quick teachers' notes section explaining what each section refers to.

A lesson following the TEEP planning cycle which looks at alliteration in poetry then moves on to support learners in writing their own alliterative sentences which can be put together to produce a class poem. Includes lesson plan, power point and all the resources for a creative and engaging lesson

A lovely lesson looking at Scrooge's character at the beginning of the novel, identifying quotations and developing PEE paragraphs. Learners use PEE to build a paper-chain of Scrooge's bad deeds similar to Marley's Ghost's chain in the novel, which can then be used as a classroom display and referred to as part of revision work. A group work and creative writing lesson based on the idea of investigating the paranormal activities reported at Lorraine Castle (The Red Room by H.G. Wells). Using the Mantle of the Expert, learners play the parts of paranormal investigators and work in teams to explore and report back on the different areas of the castle. This builds towards a creative writing piece where each individual is parted from their team by a complication and they retell the story of what happens next. This was developed and used as a very successful lesson observation. Pack includes lesson plan, power point and all resources. Lesson can be further supplemented by the addition of props from each area of the castle - I can't supply those though!

A scheme of work developed as part of the cross-curricular Forgotten Soldiers project looking at individuals from different cultures and religions who fought for the Allies during WW1 and 2. Two units of work are included: one looks at WW1 poetry as part of a creative writing task on the theme of 'Boots'; the other focuses on key individuals aiming to build awareness of the contributions of people from other ethnic groups towards the war effort.

Resources to support the comparison of two poems set in the context of Victorian poverty.

A powerpoint to support the writing of an elegy poem to commemorate the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. The presentation looks at what is an elegy, why they are written, an example of an elegy and how to write one. It also has a structured, step-by-step approach to enable students to write their own elegy poem about the Queen. There are links to Newsround reports to get ideas and a display sheet for students to write their elegies out for a display.

A series of lessons on analysing how a text persuades its audience. This looks at a leaflet from the animal rights charity PETA focusing on how it uses language and structure to persuade and culminating in an analytical essay.

A series of questions following Bloom's Taxonomy focused on Lord Capulet in Act 3, scene 5 of Romeo and Juliet.

Pictures of the Romeo and Juliet characters from the Baz Luhrrman film. I used them to help learners get to grips with who each character was. They organised the characters into Montagues/Capulets/Neither then glued them in their books in the groups. Underneath the pictures they wrote key details about each character. Could be used as a revision exercise or to explore relationships between characters.

A blank writing frame designed to look like the front page of the Verona Times. Could be used for learners to show their understanding of the plot of Romeo and Juliet through writing a newspaper report about the events of the play.
