LATTICE MULTIPLICATION

LATTICE MULTIPLICATION

(0)
The lattice method of multiplication offers several advantages, particularly for students learning multi-digit multiplication. It breaks down the process into smaller, more manageable steps, making it easier to understand and visualize the multiplication of larger numbers. This visual representation can be particularly helpful for students who are visual learners or struggle with traditional long multiplication. Additionally, the lattice method can help reduce errors by clearly organizing the partial products and simplifying the addition process. Here’s a more detailed look at the advantages: Visual Clarity: The grid structure of the lattice method provides a clear visual representation of the multiplication process, making it easier to understand how the partial products are derived. Reduced Cognitive Load: Breaking down the multiplication into smaller, individual steps reduces the cognitive load on the student, making it easier to grasp the concept, especially for larger numbers. Error Reduction: The organized structure of the lattice helps in aligning the partial products correctly, minimizing the chances of errors in the addition stage. Adaptability: The lattice method can be used to multiply numbers of varying sizes, including decimals and even polynomials. Alternative to Long Multiplication: It provides a different approach to long multiplication, which can be beneficial for students who find the traditional method challenging.

FINDING TRIANGLES - (and encourage a systematic / methodical way of working)

(0)
This is an activity that students across a large age range seem to enjoy
It involves setting it them as a CHALLENGE. A challenge to find ALL the triangles in a particular diagram made up of different regions. This can be a full lesson, a series of lessons or simply a lesson starter depending on how you present it to them. It can also be set as an individual, pairs or table activity. It could be made competitive between individuals, pairs or tables. It could form part of a homework? It could form a part of a class display. FULL LESSON It’s main aim will be to get the students to work in a methodical/systematic way. You could give it them and see what they can achieve on their own before showing how they can work smarter in order to find ALL the solutions. There are 50 puzzles to choose from that vary in difficulty so pick the puzzles you think will suitable for your students. The number of solutions per puzzle are in the 5-99 range. While it is generally true that the more solutions there are the more systematic/methodical the students have to be, but some of the mid-range ones between say, 20-40 it will be essential. STARTER OR SHORT ACTIVITY Pick a suitable puzzle, set a time limit and just ask students to find how many triangles are made up of, perhaps 6 regions or 3 and 4 regions. Consult the ‘Puzzle Analysis grids to help you choose) For example: Puzzle 28 has 99 triangles hidden it. Perhaps okay for a group to work on but looking at this table you might ask them to find just the 4 region triangles of which there are 15. Included in the resource An Introduction PowerPoint (14 slides) A 50 page PDF (one puzzle per page) with each page having 12 blank diagrams (with guide lines so they can be cut out individually). A 50 slide PowerPoint showing the solutions. 500+ pieces of CLIP ART (All the BLANK diagrams and individual SOLUTION diagrams) so you can use in your own documents if needed. A puzzle analysis for each puzzle showing the distribution of the number of regions used per triangle.

SEARCH-FIND-COUNT - AT THE BEACH USE INCLUDED POWERPOINT for WHOLE CLASS INVOLVEMENT WORKSHEET AND ANSWERS CAN BE PRINTED VIA POWERPOINT I have not tried this as I am a secondary teacher but I was trying to come up with an idea for a primary college that would make counting ‘more interesting’ . I thought that the main image may be laminated to allow pupils to use a whiteboard marker to cross off/ circle the ones they have found. A tally chart(s) also could be used. I have included all the ARTWORK I have drawn as individual clip-art so that you could use them to create your own PowerPoints, Notebook files etc If it a popular/useful resource, I may make a series with different topics/themes. Please let me know what you think! ALSO SEE SEARCH - FIND - COUNT FARM ANIMALS

CHRISTMAS PELMANISM GAME

CHRISTMAS PELMANISM GAME

(0)
A PELMANISM GAME with 18 Christmas themed images. The set I have made includes 4 of each image. So 72 cards in total. These can be set out in various configurations 2x36, 3x24, 4x18, 6x12, 8x9 for game play However you will need at least 2 copies of each image you use to make smaller sets PRINTING I have printed them back-to-back on 300gsm A4 card. (but paper will do if you are going to stick them on something else to act as a card back) So you have 9 cards on one side and the card backs on the other. Check your printer settings. Print one side, put the sheet back in the printer the opposite way around and print the card back page. CUTTING OUT I cut them out from the image side, a fraction inside the image design. In this way you should get an even border on the card back side if they have lined up correctly. I have also use a craft corner cutter 4mm , to round off the card corners and put them in plastic cards sleeves to help preserve them and a box to put them in. See IMAGES of my SET
