Flywheel Practical Engineering Moments of Inertia A level Physics

Originally used for a fantastic remote learning lesson for AQA A level Physics Engineering Moments of Inertia topic. Using these resources students will carry out a virtual practical to measure the moment of inertia of a flywheel. No teacher input required! The pdf file allows students to independently master the underlying equations for the flywheel practical using an interactive book. In the second section of the lesson students take measurements of a flywheel from a YouTube clip to use with the equations. A great lesson, very strongly recommended. After completion, students will be able to conduct the same practical independent of the teacher. A justified boast for a thorough and engaging lesson. Performance will vary through different apps and platforms. The Adobe Acrobat Reader is optimal on “single page view”, Outlook and OneNote are inferior. A relaxing half hour for the teacher! Students use this pdf file on iPads/ tablets/ laptops. The emphasis is on student independence. Lots of guidance is available for incorrect answers. The file contains 67 hyperlinked slides with twenety questions to test their understanding as they go along. A fun and competitive interactive whiteboard game in which two teams take it in turns to match tiles. An interactive whiteboard or two remote mice works best. The game automatically scores and has a built in timer in the event of a draw. Students really enjoy the competitiveness. This game won a Microsoft innovation award. Very strongly recommended for all ages. This template allows you to make your own interactive whiteboard games. Making your own game should take about five minutes. A bonus matching pairs pictures template is included so you can include pictures and diagrams in your games. Plays by the same rules as popular children’s card game “TopTrumps”. A card game with twenty-three different fundamental particles. I recommend this to introduce the particles topic at A-level, it is very engaging. Make up a whole class set for students to work in pairs they will accidentally learn loads whilst having fun. My students often have the cards in front of them throughout the topic. Added rules for annihilation when a particle and antiparticle meet. Graphics used by permission by the Particle Zoo

This lesson is a favourite of mine. The topic may not be on an examined syllabus anymore but works as an excellent extension or gain time lesson. Contains a lot of big ideas but broken up with short activities. Differentiated question sheets are embedded in the powerpoint. Ofsted judged this lesson with my year 9s as"outstanding" in every area.

Two worksheets with answers on atomic symbols, isotopes, alpha and beta decay, fission and fusion nuclear equations. A very brief presentation is included with examples for alpha and beta decay. When my students met this topic in A2 OCR Physics, these resources provided a satisfying recap. Students generally muddled through the questions with answers requiring little teacher input. These worksheets would also work well for GCSE students.
