This interesting and highly-stimulating lesson enables students to create their very own African country geography study presentations. The lesson format and resources enables them to engage with varied geographical concepts including biomes, population, rivers, lakes, mountains, climate, borders and capital cities. The lesson follows a clear, logical, bite-size learning journey, which guides students towards relevant and constructive learning objectives, and helps them to build their presentations. Over the course of this journey, they: -Remember key facts about the African continent to contextualise their learning; -Pick an African nation at random; -Follow a clear checkist and model example, enabling them to create presentations with the following sections: Physical Geography Key Facts, Human Geography Key Fact, Biomes and Climate, Rivers, Lakes and Mountains, and Capital City. -Presenting their country study, with reference to clear guidance on effective speaking and listening skills. -Self-assess their outcomes using the learning objectives. The lesson benefits from access to atlases and/or web-searching devices. This lesson resource is made up of a visually engaging whole-lesson PowerPoint presentation (17 slides), the countries for selection, and the checklist. The resources within this lesson can be easily adapted to suit home/remote learning.

This whole class reading session aims to develop children’s comprehension skills whilst developing their understanding of the animals of the forest floor in the Amazon Rainforest. The original information text includes the following sections: -Introduction to the Forest Floor -Large Mammals on the Forest Floor: Jaguars, Giant Anteaters, Tapirs -Reptiles, Insects and Creepy Crawlies: Green Anacondas, Arachnids, Leafcutter Ants. -Summary of Life on the Forest Floor The hunting, dietary habits, appearance and behaviour of each animal are described, in addition to providing interesting facts in accessible language. The resource pack includes the extract and all of the activities for the session, which the class are guided through via a comprehensive and engaging PowerPoint presentation. The reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language. The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions, fact-checking and deeper thinking activities. An additional scaffolded worksheet for children needing additional support/ structure is also provided (in both Word and PDF). The session is best suited for children in KS2 (I originally used the resources with a year 4 class), but with minor adaptations may be used for slightly older and younger year groups.

These highly engaging and purposeful lessons are the first two lessons in a series of six building towards an extended creative writing piece based on the ‘Seven Natural Wonders of the World.’ In these lessons, children learn: -What nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are, and how to use these ‘base words’ for clarity and effect in their writing; -About each of the Seven Wonders of the world, through viewing pictures and reading key facts; -How to use base words and their five senses to begin to describe the natural wonders, moving from word level to sentence level over the two lessons; Included is the clear, comprehensive and colourful PowerPoint presentation for both lessons (24 slides) and the worksheets/templates needed for the 3 main activities (provided in both Word and PDF). These highly engaging and purposeful writing lessons are the final two lessons in a series of six building towards an extended creative writing piece based on the ‘Seven Natural Wonders of the World.’ These two lessons move the children on from sentence level ideas, to considering whole text structure and cohesion. Throughout the lessons, children learn: -What the different types of connectives are, and how these can be used to build cohesion within and between paragraphs; -How whole texts can be structured for clarity and effect; -How to punctuate their work accurately - they then use this information to edit and redrafts sections of their writing. Included is the clear, comprehensive and colourful PowerPoint presentation for both lessons (22 slides), the worksheet needed for the main activity, and the structure strip (both provided in Word and PDF). This whole class reading session aims to develop children’s comprehension skills when reading non-fiction texts. It focuses on their reading of an original non-fiction article introducing Mount Everest. The text includes details of the climbing history of the mountain, its climate, terrain and information about the Sherpas who live and work on and around the mountain. The reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language. The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The session is best suited for children in years 2-4, although with minor adaptations it could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups.
