This lesson covers the concepts of magnification (calculations), resolution and the processes of preparing to study the structure and function of various cells and organelles (cell fractionation, homogenation, ultracentrifugation, calibration of eyepiece graticule). It contains new Biology A level content along with worked examples of calculations and exam style questions. The lesson contains a “quick starter” on student entry to the class and a retrieval grid recapping knowledge from GCSE Biology.

This lesson contains new A level Biology knowledge about the organelles in eukaryotic cells. There is a retrieval task which recaps previous knowledge of the cells topic so far as well as GCSE Biology (cells). The various tasks, mini plenaries and exam style questions allows students to achieve a deeper understanding about the structures inside eukaryotic cells and new structures that are not introduced at GCSE.

This lesson outlines the principles of both types of electron microscopes (TEM and SEM). It also contains knowledge on strengths and limitations of both types of microscopes. There is also an optional “research task” within the lesson if you have access to technology. This will open up the opportunity for your students to present their findings about electron microscopes. Giving you the option, as the teacher/lecturer, of a student led approach. Students can then evaluate each others presentations with “two stars and a wish” document. There are various tasks and exam style questions to allow students to evaluate the use of microscopes. There is an opportunity at the end of the lesson for student reflection, encouraging students read further into the topics they found more challenging.

Writing frames are designed to help students complete long answer exam style questions effectively. This had provided a lot of success with these in the classroom and when tutoring and has given students a lot of confidence when answers such questions in the future. This can also be used as a revision tool, if students practice planning/writing answers using these, this could help them to remember to do so in their exams. This has been used cross-curricula not just in my subject.
