Teacher’s Notes describes the lesson which you can choose to make it last throughout the whole morning or afternoon or 1 hour session.

A one hour lesson for children to explore repeating patterns in the context of Christmas.
The lesson should last 50 mins to 1 hour depending on how long your students take to design their patterns:
Introduction to set the scene: 10-15mins;
Main Lesson 15-20 mins;
Consolidation of lesson (work at table): 20 mins; and
Plenary/Closing session 5-10mins.
Bring in some Christmas wrapping paper with repeated patterns of pictures and/or shapes or you can display Slide 1 showing examples of Christmas patterns.
The children may have been wrapping presents or looking at wrapped presents. Focus their attention on the patterns.
This lesson takes children through looking at simple picture patterns and working out the next picture in the sequence.
Opportunity for children to create their own repeated patterns by cutting and pasting pictures - using pictures on Activity Sheet 1b
Opportunity to create a whole sheet of repeated patterns and pictures/shapes to show to the whole class in the plenary- Extensions Pattern Worksheet.
ICT Link - The more competent computer users can create colour filled shapes to produce their own design of repeated patterns to show the rest of the class and explain what they did on the computer.

Each of the four worksheets contain a variety of tasks for students to complete on the topic of buying school stationery.
Worksheet 1 - Students look at the pictures and price of each item and then work out how much two items of school supplies cost.
Two questions at the bottom: Which student spent the most? Which student spent the least amount of money?
Worksheet 2 - This worksheet is similar to the above except students add three items of stationery together.
Worksheet 3 - Students answer 6 questions about the items, e.g. Which item is the most expensive? How much less does the eraser cost than the calculator? etc.
The next task is to write the new price for each item which has risen by 10 cents.
Worksheet 4 - The first task is to write the new price of the items which have risen by 20 euro cents. Second task - to add up 3 items of stationery at the new price.
Worksheet 5 - Biggest Euro Sale Now On! - Students reduce the price of each item by 11 cents. They then recalculate the items of stationery bought.
Additional worksheets:
Drawing coins to match the price tags - students use the fewest number of coins as many times as they can.
Add up the coins and write the total on the price tag for each object shown.
Challenge: Students add up all the prices on the tags and write the total amount of money spent.

Cut and paste activity called Sandwich Orders (1) and (2). There are two activities. The first worksheet shows the numbers in words of each type of sandwich. The second worksheet shows the different sandwiches labelled with numbers. Children cut out and match each sandwich labelled with a number e.g. with 75 (ham and cheese) to the word number shown on worksheet 1.
Practical work at tables - put a selection of laminated word number cards in a container in the middle of the table. Children choose a card and write the word as digits on their whiteboards. E.g. S/he picks out thirty-four and writes 34.
Vice versa - Put a selection of laminated digit flash card in a container. Children choose a number and write it in words on their whiteboards.

Counting Task Cards
The cards are on PowerPoint Slides and as PDF activity worksheets which you can print off and laminate. Students count the counters or dots and write down the number.
You can do this activity as a whole class. Play the PowerPoint Presentation and students can either say how many counters they see or write the answer on their whiteboards.
25 Addition Task Cards
The addition task cards are on PowerPoint Slides. Hand out whiteboards/dry erase pens. Show one or two slides.
Tell students that There are two blue blank boxes below the tens frame for students to write two addition sums.
Ask: How many blue counters do you see?
Ask: How many yellow counters do you see?
Now tell the students to write an addition sum using the plus and equals sign and then to show you on their whiteboards.
Ask: Does it matter which way we write the addition sum? And would it change the answer?
You can print out the task cards as they are also saved as PDFs and laminate for students to practise write addition sums two ways.
Other suggested uses
Learning about doubles.
Select some of the addition cards including those with the same amount colours on each card, i.e. 1 + 1; 2 + 2; 3 + 3; 4 + 4; 5 + 5.
Ask children what they notice about the number of counters? Same number repeated twice, 3 + 3.
Say 2 + 2 = 4 is the same as saying double 2 is 4
3 + 3 = 6 is the same as saying double 3 is 6
Optional
All the task cards on are on PowerPoint, so you can change the colour of the counters and print off.

Write and erase
You can print, laminate and cut out the cards for pupils to practise adding up coin values. Ideal for early finishers and for those pupils who need more practice in adding up coins.
Print off, cut out and glue into workbooks
You may wish to record pupils’ work and so this resource is great for cutting out and sticking into workbooks or onto plain paper. Pupils do not have to work through the task cards in number order. Whatever ability the pupil is at, you can choose the appropriate task card.
There is a Recording Sheet with space for the pupil’s name and date for when each activity card was completed.
Alternative uses
I have included blank card and coins which you can prepare to suit the needs of your pupils.
E.g. Write the amount of money on the right-hand side of the card and then pupils cut out the coins to match the amount of money you have written down.
Pupils can cut out the little flags and stick on the blank task cards.
For small group or one-to-one activity
Lay out cards that have the same value but different combinations of coins.
Ask pupils to match the cards that add up the same amount and elicit what coins were used on each card. E.g. Both cards add up to 50 Euro cents but one card shows 3x 10c and 1x 20c and the other card shows 2x20c and 1x 10c.

This worksheet activity is suitable for Reception upwards. It can be adapted into sorting numbers into 2s or 5s and used as revision.
The number track must first be completed and then the children attempt the calculations.
In practice, the children are making their own number track.
This is an adaptation of the sorting in tens worksheets.
This resource is about comparing two lengths using a strip of paper cut to the same height of each child in the class.
Lesson plan and PowerPoint Presentation included - can be adapted.
The children will enjoy this activity. It is a precursor to other types of measurements children will be learning later on in maths.
The only preparation needed is cutting strips of paper (colour paper if preferred) not too thin to the height of each child to carry out the activity.
Arrays are prerequisite for children to learn multiplication.
It may be beneficial if children use unifix cubes with the worksheets and then write the multiplication sentence.
Additional new activity: Children draw the multiplication sum as an array and shade in on the grid and to show that it is commutative.
