A whole-group lively & communicative language learning game, perfect for practising, reinforcing and refreshing a range of animals in French. The game is ideal for language learning, with a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking and reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice - point out particular phonemes, sounds and accents, such as the silent x on the plural of cheval : chevaux, as this is really useful at consolidating accurate French pronunciation.
There are 25 animals featured in the game: bee : bird : butterfly : cat : caterpillar : chicken : cow : dog : dolphin : donkey : duck : fish : fox : frog : horse : kangaroo : monkey : mouse : owl : parrot : pig : rabbit : sheep : spider : tortoise / turtle

There is implicit input on grammatical concepts such as singular and plural, adjectival agreement, gender, definite, indefinite and partitive articles and position of adjectives, either preceding or proceeding the particular noun, which can differ from language to language: this is really useful for students who may be learning more than one language at a particular time, and a successful way of really getting the most of what looks like a straightforward game for consolidating the target vocabulary.

Dominoes games are an ideal language learning activity, and a lively alternative to more traditional practice and consolidation activities. These games will help students build up and embed their knowledge of how to tell the time in Spanish in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. Students can work happily challenging themselves and each other to create a perfect domino time sequence line. The game has a bonus multi-focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, and reading.
There are three games, each with a slightly different level of challenge:
= Challenge 1 features a range of clock times,o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past the hour - students tend to learn those clock times first, so it’s good to have a real focus on them to ensure students are confident with the general concept of telling the time in Spanish. The dominoes feature en punto to express o’clock, but it’s useful to point out to students that it’s not absolutely necessary, and they’ll see Es la una for example, perhaps even more frequently than Es la una en punto, which tends to convey a certain emphasis. The time phrase appears first, followed by the clock face.
= Challenge 2 features a range of all analogue clock times, and is a slightly longer game than Challenge One. Again, the time phrase appears first, followed by the clock face.
= Challenge 3*** also features a range of analogue clock times, and is the same size as Challenge Two. In this challenge, the clock face appears first, followed by the time phrase, which works slightly differently on recall, and really does help to consolidate knowledge.
There’s definitely prep involved - download, print out, and laminate. Laminating is definitely worth the extra time and expense, because the dominoes are far more learner-friendly, and will last in excellent condition for years. The background design on each challenge is different, allowing students to identify which challenge the individual dominoes belong to.

The flashcards / posters introduce students to a range of animals in French, and they are able to familiarize themselves with how French words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. Students notice the different words for a/an, and ask why some animals are un, and others are une. Use this as a prompt to introduce the concept of gender in French.
There are 20 animals using the masculine and feminine indefinite article, which is a great opportunity to begin to compare French to English. There are some insects and birds, as well as animals that feature in very popular stories, such as ours and loup. Looking at language, and the ways it works, either similarly to, or differently from their first language, helps students become implicitly aware of linguistic concepts in both languages, which is really useful for both current and later learning.
The animals are: a bear : a bee : a bird : a butterfly : a cat : a dog : a fish : a fox : a frog : a horse : a kangaroo : a monkey : a mouse : an owl : a parrot : a rabbit : a spider : a squirrel : a turtle / a tortoise : a wolf
It doesn’t matter if some of the animals don’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the posters / flashcards provide learners with daily opportunities to engage with the written word in French, to develop their recognition and recall of individual words, to identify cognates and near-cognates and to begin to link spelling with sound in French. They also help learners begin to work out the meaning of new and unknown words from visual clues or prompts.
There are three sets of 20 9.5x11 (A4) portrait posters, each with a different background for you to choose from: French flag, animal footprint or black wave.

Perfect for young learners of Spanish and an ideal introduction to the animal kingdom in Spanish. They provide lots of opportunities to learn a range of animals, both***masculine and feminine***, and really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Children can develop their skills in word recognition and recall, pronunciation, speaking, listening and reading in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They’re a great way of introducing the concept of gender, and of looking at the indefinite article in Spanish too.
It doesn’t matter is any of the animals don’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the card games encourage children to engage happily and confidently with Spanish, to identify cognates and near-cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in Spanish. They also help learners begin to work out the meaning of unknown words using both visual clues and prompts, as well as linguistic indicators.
There are 24 animals featured, across a series of decks, which enable you to vary and differentiate your games:
Deck 1: picture and words cards, with both an image of, and the word for, the animal in Spanish, which is useful for multi-skill learning, particularly in the introductory phase of learning animal vocabulary, and for familiarising students with the written word in Spanish.
Deck 2: picture-only cards, useful for vocabulary recall
Deck 3: word-only cards in French, useful for word recognition, reading and spelling.
Deck 4: word-only cards in English, useful for a variety of games focusing on vocabulary recall
Deck 5: both Spanish & English words on a single card, useful for close comparison of language, and recognition of corresponding words
