This lesson guides students through the use of the student’s t-test (both Paired and Unpaired). It is fully-resourced with a detailed PowerPoint with worked examples and accompanying student work booklet that have been designed to cover this aspect of the A-level Biology specification. The lesson includes a step-by-step guide that demonstrates how students should select an appropriate statistical test (from Chi squared, Spearman’s rank, Student’s t-test and paired t-test). The PowerPoint contains worked examples of how to carry out a paired and unpaired Student’s t tests from stating a null hypothesis, carrying out the statistic, how to find a critical value, what that means, compare the critical value with the statistical value, reject or accept the null hypothesis and write a conclusion. The accompanying student booklet contains examination questions to consolidate the students’ understanding and worked answers are provided in the PowerPoint and also in an accompanying teacher version of the workbook. This resource also contains an interactive Excel Spreadsheet designed to support students and educators in mastering hypothesis testing using the Student’s t-test. This includes a Paired and Unpaired t-test calculator with worked examples. Enter your own data and the spreadsheet automatically calculates the p-value! This lesson guides students through the use of the chi-squared test to determine the significance of the difference between observed and expected results. It is fully-resourced with a detailed PowerPoint and accompanying student workbooklet that have been designed to cover this aspect of the A-level Biology specification. The lesson includes a step-by-step guide that demonstrates how students should select an appropriate statistical test ( from Chi squared, Spearman’s rank, Student’s t-test and paired t-test). It also explain how the chi-squared (χ2) test can be used to determine the significance of the difference between observed and expected results with a worked example. The student workbook has a series of chi squared calculation questions of increasing difficulty using a range of biology topics with including ecology, antibiotic resistance in bacteria, phenotypic ratios in a dihybrid cross and mitosis. The accompanying PowerPoint highlights the method to calculate the expected numbers and then how to find the critical value in order to compare it against the chi-squared value for each question.

How to setup: This takes very little time to prepare! Just gather suitable retrieval practice questions you want to review with the pupils and go.
