The publication of issue 20(1) of Research in LearningTechnology(RLT) is a landmark for the Association for Learning Technology (ALT). It is the first issue since the journal made the switch, on 1 January 2012, to Open Access, and the first with our new publisher Co-Action Publishing. Traditionally, research journals have been published under a subscription model, whereby subscribers (individuals or institutional libraries) receive access in return for payment, sometimes as part of their membership of a scholarly society, as has been the case for ALT.

Key Stage 3 lesson on the crusades. The lesson is at least an hour long and can easily be two lessons.
We start with retrieval practice starter. We then go on to introduce the concept of a crusade. We then examine Pope Urban’s famous sermon looking for threats to christians and potential rewards. We then introduce King Richard I before a classification task on the reasons why people went on crusade. The pupils classify the reasons in either money and power or religious reasons. The pupils then rank the reasons to work out what the main appeal of the crusades were. We then finish with a writing task where the pupils create a diary entry having been invited to join Richard’s crusade. Included is:
Retrieval practice starter
Source analysis task on Urban’s sermon of 1095
Classification task "For God or Gold"
Extended writing task using a diary entry narrative.
Post-it note plenary.
Hope this helps.

GREAT TOOL FOR TEACHER, PEER OR SELF-ASSESSMENT IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION!!!
This colorful Physical Education Poster displays an Olympic-themed, 4 point grading rubric that can be utilized by teachers during student, PE skill and/or concept assessment. It can also be informative for students during PE skill self-assessment and by their classmates through peer-assessment. The inspiration for this poster came from Krista Winn and April Baugh from Facebook (PE Central) posts of a 4 point rubric they use in their classrooms.
The poster (in 4 colors) displays the 3 Olympic medals as motivation to improve PE assessment scores and provides a descriptor statement and graphical icons to help students easily relate to each score point.
The posters are in a Zip folder with 2 Formats- PDF and JPEG (originally set for 8 ½ by 11 sheets) but they can easily be copied on a school or store Poster-Maker to convert to a large sized poster. You can then place it inside your gym or playing area for your students to see and for you to reference while you teach your daily physical education lessons.
This Physical Education Poster is designed for all ages but is best suited for students from Kindergarten through the 8th Grade
This is a game Danny The Ref called The Gold Rush to aid the revision. It covers topics at grade 1 to 3. The rules are included and the operation is fairly self evident. Click the question number to go to the question, anywhere to bring up the answer, the treasure chest to go back to the grid and a square in the grid to make it disappear. It’s basically an adaptation of Battleships with added Spandau Ballet!
We have developed this report template and additional worksheets, organizers, tools and forms to use for your students to create, develop, write, edit, illustrate, present, and assess their California Gold Rush report. This template can be for their formal report or utilized as a study guide to develop their report for them to type or write on their own. This packet is designed for you to pick and choose the parts of the report that you’d like to use, or just use it all! There are many text dependent questions for your students to research and cite their evidence of where they found the information, a vocabulary section, and some essential questions where your students can apply the knowledge they have learned at a deeper, higher level. We encourage you to have your students use a wide variety of resources to gather the necessary information to complete this report.
