This is a letter from Prince Cinders to Fairy Godmother asking for help. This is a good book to use for the Traditional stories unit for Year 2 and supports the Talk For Writing literacy approach. You will find an exemplar text for children to imitate and learn with all the grammar features of the year 2 curriculum including those to achieve Greater Depth. Good examples of features include, suffixes, contractions, exclamatory sentences, compound words, common exception words, apostrophe for possession, and expanded noun phrases. Children can then move on to innovating their own letter and then move on to the invention stage. Can also be used in guided reading to support the same genre.

Children can learn about the properties of regular, simple 2d shapes as well being extended to naming and creating new irregular shapes. Yer 2 Maths This is an excellent collection of Maths Sats end of Ks1 arithmatic and reasoning example questions. With this resource you will find examples of 40 + powerpoint slides that include all these areas; place value, addition and subtraction on a number line, repeated subtraction, miltiplication, fractions of amount, adding money, using inverse of addition and subtraction, using known facts, number bonds, odds and evens and balancing equations. The children can work through each slide systematically to revise the new maths curriculum or it can be used as a starter to improve the mathematical understanding of children working at the expected standard. Mastery level questioning has been included. All powerpoint is easily accessible and editable to make it more or less challenging. Year 2 Reading and Writing- poetry New English Curriculum This fabulous resources has an array of classic poetry with comprehensions. The sound collector has differentiated comprehension for higher ability (working at greater depth) and then differentiated down so that all the class can access and enjoy classic poetry. Children answer literal, inference and evaluative questions about the poem. After that , they spend a day creating their own verses using similar pattern structures. There are also other many fun and enjoyable poems to learn and perform by Roger McGough, and Valerie Bloom- such as The River, and other sound poems. The Day the Crayons Quit is a working at the expected standard reading text for Year 2. This guided reading unit is a wonderful text to use to engage reluctant readers. This reading unit is designed to support the new English Reading Framework. It is suitable for comprehension with looking, clue and thinking questions and encourages children to talk through their answers using a reciprocal approach. The resources have been designed for children to read a few letters at a time and answer literal and inference based questions. There are also other links such as poetry about crayons so that children can experience a range of genres and respond to them. Teachers can allow children to read letters written in the style of the book so there is a 'I quit' letter from the teacher for children to respond to. This work can help towards moderation and assessment purposes and evidence at the end of the year. The unit was taught over 3 weeks and includes visuals for additional activities such as predict what the crayons are saying in speech bubbles. Year 2 Writing Narrative Where the Wild Things Are Film and Book Exemplar text to introduce children to narrative writing - called Voyage and Return. Both the film and book are used simultaneously to learn about the main character and write a narrative. An excellent powerpoint with more than 15 slides demonstrates how to write descriptive scenes from the story, a narrative, character traits, and a success ladder. The exemplar text meets the requirements of English New Curriculum objectives. Explicit reference has been made to grammatical features including varying sentence types, conjunctions, words with suffixes, and the use of common exception words. Teachers may use the text in the imitation stage, innovate to where the main character meets a new wild thing, and then invent their own voyage and return narrative. An excellent film and text to use to promote boys writing.

This is an excellent information planning 'All About Whales'. The inspiration for this was from the book the Snail and the Whales by Julia Donaldson. It's a boy friendly text and the children got to keep African snails in the classroom. Leading on from this they learnt an exemplar text about whales, imitated it and then innovated to write their own information text about snails. This unit was linked to grammar features from the new curriculum 2017- 18 for Year 2. It includes using targets to develop use of expanded noun phrases, conjunctions and varied openers. Children structured their writing according to the purpose using headings as questions. The resource includes six weeks of planning, a text map, exemplar text, tool boxing ideas and visuals to support the imitation stage.
