This activity is suitable for Hospitality, Family & Consumer Science, Food Technology and any other food related courses where students need to know the definitions of each method of cookery. Included in the pdf file is the instructions, name and definition for each of the 13 methods of cookery. Cards can be printed in colour directly onto card stock, or printed on regular paper and laminated. To play: hand out the definitions and terms to the students and have them find their match. As a revision activity, pass out a complete set of cards to each small group or individual and have them match the term/name of the method of cookery to its correct definition. Not only does it mean they may lose marks but we have to mark their task after our marking period ends. It is important for students to understand the need to submit tasks by their due dates because it helps them understand time limits for when they get out into the big wide world and get jobs. Everyone needs to be able to work towards a deadline whether they are a shop assistant, cleaner, teacher or a CEO running a business. The wearing of clothing is a specifically human characteristic and most human societies wear some form of clothing. This comprehension task runs briefly through the types of clothing worn in ancient civilisations such as Ancient Greece, Rome, the Iron Age and the Byzantines and why they preferred to leave their fabric uncut. It also covers the Enlightenment period which introduced formal dress and ‘undress’ or casual clothing as well as how the Industrial Revolution impacted clothing as we know it today. Students read through the article and answer the questions. This can be done as a whole class task or set for individual students as part of a casual or filler lesson.

This comprehension task takes an article from a Hospitality industry magazine and demonstrates how several Australian pioneering chefs are leading the way for reducing food waste in their restaurants. This task will help students develop their understanding of the Source and Use Information on the Hospitality Industry unit of competency. This is a great homework task after a sustainability lesson or as part of a casual/relief lesson.

Herbs and spices are used to add colour, variety and unique flavours to food. Herbs and spices also come from different components of plants. This task utilises student fine motor skills of cutting and pasting with digital research to track down which part of the plant each herb and spice comes from. There is a classification table that should be printed A3 size for each student and 4 (printed on A4) pages (a total of 28 herbs and spices) flash cards for students to cut out. Answers are included. Organise your cool room or fridge/freezer with these great tray or trolley tags. It covers everything you or your Food Prep Assistant needs to know to have the ingredient trays or trolleys set up and ready to go for each recipe for each class. These tags cover: day of the week, lesson period required, whether your are DEMonstrating the recipe or your students are completing their PRACtical, teacher name, class name and even space for the recipe name or specific notes/additions required. Particularly useful if you or your Food Prep Assistant has a lot of classes/recipes/ingredients to sort and set up over the week. The tags can also be used if you have your students bringing in their own ingredients - just get them to set their ingredients up on their own tray or trolley and add their name, class, lesson, day and recipe. It makes it super easy to see when and who the ingredients are being used for!

It asks students to note the obvious - title, author and genre but then gets them delving deeper by providing a brief story summary, star rating, whether they would recommend others read the book, their favourite quote, best and worst aspects, elements of figurative language and their final thoughts and review. There is space for an image of the book cover or drawing by the student of an aspect of the story they responded to. One of the biggest issues facing our students today is the all encompassing rabbit hole of social media, often to the detriment of their life, education, creativity and our subject area. One student in Australia is bucking the trend by avoiding social media and learning to crochet in her spare time, to the point she is now creating her own patterns and winning state competitions! This comprehension task is based on a news article about her journey to help show our students there is more to life than Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and any other online trend that will try to permeate its way into our every day lives. Students are given the article (with an accompanying link to a YouTube clip) and need to answer the related questions. This task can be done as an end of lesson filler, homework task or left with a casual/relief teacher.

Our bodies can’t make nutrients so knowing the foods that are high in essential nutrients helps us make informed choices about the foods we eat. This research task asks students to select one of the 6 important nutrients, outline its importance for the body, identify the minimum and maximum daily requirements, explain what happens if we are deficient in it as well as locating a short recipe that provides the body with a good amount of the nutrient. This end of unit reflection sheet is the perfect tool for any student in any subject to fill in at the end of any topic or unit. It asks 4 simple questions that will assist any teacher in finding out if their students understood the content, bonded with the teaching materials, resources, methods and if they actually enjoyed learning about the topic. There’s nothing more truthful than a student telling you what they hated about your class but this way it’s done in a constructive and valuable way.
