Simple but fun Literacy/English games that I created for a last lesson with a small group of students. Includes a bingo round, splat round, and a rap-off task at the end. For Splat, two students (from different teams) stand at either side of the board with a ruler. I will say a word and students have to splat the opposite/synonym with their ruler. First to splat the correct word earns a point for their team.

This resource explores the six family poems in the anthology: Walking Away Eden Rock Follower Mother, Any Distance Before You Were Mine Climbing My Grandfather These lessons were based on first readings of the poems in Year 10, with a focus on annotating the anthology and analysing four key quotations from each poem. For each poem, there is a slide with four key quotations that are scaffolded to support students in exploring their own analysis before coming together as a class and annotating under the visualiser.

A lesson that relies on students having already read the poems ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’ and ‘Exposure’ in a previous lesson. This lesson facilitates students to practice a response to the 8 mark Unseen Poetry Comparison question in the GCSE AQA Paper 2 Literature exam. Resource includes: Powerpoint guiding students through the requirements of the question: In both ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’ and ‘Exposure’ the speakers describe the reality of war. Designed for mixed ability KS3 students and focuses on understanding and analysing the poem. This resource first explores the context of Apartheid and Afrika’s background, then moving onto how this context can be applied to an understanding of the poem. It then moves on to analysis of the poem with a focus on imagery - this has a supporting resource to scaffold analysis. Poem with numbered stanzas also included.
