The new GCSE says that pupils need to use idioms in their speaking and writing in order to score a 9. Here is my attempt to shoehorn some common and easy to learn idioms.

The sentence will be displayed for 20 seconds, enough time for you to say it a few times and for students to study it, When it disappears automatically, the students have the time it takes the frog to cross the room to write the sentence from memory on whiteboards or in books. More fun than it sounds.

I’ve used this many times at open evenings. Lay out the socks on the table. Have a Yr 7 volunteer cut them out first. Have a volunteer to time guests matching up the socks. Starts a conversation about how similar German and English are. Can also be used in class as a sort of quiz quiz trade/find your partner race.

Model lots of complex perfect tense language in this trapdoor activity. Lesson sequence 1 )Read aloud French; pupils note down numbers of phrase heard 2) Read aloud English; pupils note down number of French translation 3) Allow pupils to play the trapdoor guessing game in pairs 5) Display numbers for pupils to write up sentences. 6) Pupils swap sentences and translate each others.

A happy families style card game. Adverbs, auxiliaries, participles and infinitives are colour coded to help. All cards are placed face down and pupils take in turns to flip four cards to make correct sentences.

Print these slides two to a sheet and cut up. Have three of the boxes that paper comes in. ( One for French English German) Guests at evening win prizes for pulling out a pair or a trio of matching words. Pictures on cards make it easier for Yr7 volunteer who can run the show.
