Repeating Pattern - 2D Shapes and colour Threading

New online service coming soon with FREE downloads (including this resource) available! For more information visit https://alphabetlearning.online What’s included? This download includes x1 A4, landscape pdf sheet, with ‘square’ shaped (paper/card) 2D shape beads. What’s it for? This resource has been designed for learners to become more familiar with 2D shapes and creating a repeating pattern. Learners will first need to consider which 2D shapes (and colours) to focus on and as the pattern develops think about which 2D shape/colour comes next. Whilst learners work on this activity they will also improve and develop their fine motor skills. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children and pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details The layout includes x6 rows and x9 columns of square shaped beads each with a different coloured 2D shape. Beads are arranged in rainbow order to help guide and motivate learners in finding the next shape (and colour) in the pattern. This is an ideal activity to keep learners busy and independent. 2D shapes included are semi circles (pink), circles, (red), triangles (orange), diamonds (yellow), squares (green), rectangles (turquoise), stars (blue), pentagons (purple), hexagons (maroon). There are x6 beads of each shape. Dotted guide line showing where to cut and punch a hole are included. The hole to punch is 4mm in size though a smaller hole punch could be used (to increase the fine motor skills challenge!) These 2D shape beads will ‘hang’ from one corner once threaded - as the cover image demonstrates. Learners will need a piece of string/ribbon/pipecleaner to thread their paper/card beads onto. Differentiation For more able learners let them decide which 2D shapes and colours to choose to create a repeating pattern of up to x9 2D shapes/colours. For those who are new to creating repeating patterns/find this tricky we recommend limiting the 2D shapes/colours learners are given, starting with just two and creating an alternate pattern initially. Once learners have been successful with two shapes/colours they can introduce additional shapes/colours to extend them. Suggestions We recommendation that these beads are printed onto card to improve their durability. The square bead design makes the beads easy to prepare, requiring only straight cuts to separate them. We recommend cutting each row into strips of x9 2D shapes, punching holes along each strip then separating each 2D shape by cutting along the dotted lines. This is the most efficient way we have found! Important message… ANY issues with any of this please don’t hesitate to get in touch - we are happy to make changes.

Ten green bottles plain AND blank to count, number and order. How to use this resource Learners can count the number of bottles any time/while singing the ‘ten green bottles’ song, they can hand write the numbers on themselves and/or order the numbered set - to 10 and back…as a challenge… This resource could be used during a group/class singing session - using blue tac/velcro (the old fashioned way!) to display the ten bottles and removing one each time. In my experience learners just love to be chosen to knock the next bottle (physically) to the ground - I have found this beats any online/animated version every single time! Halving to 12 Investigation Fruit (in order)
alphabetlearningalphabetlearning

Halving to 12 Investigation Fruit (in order)

(0)
New online service coming soon with FREE downloads (including this resource) available! For more information visit https://alphabetlearning.online What’s included? This download includes one resource - two pages featuring x12 ‘half’ problems (using fruit/veg) to complete - each of the x12 questions involves sharing the total amount (from 1 to 12) into two equal groups - ‘halves’. The learner will discover which numbers between 1 and 12 can and cannot be halved and of those numbers which can be halved equally learners will identify how much ‘half’ is. What’s it for? This resource introduces learners to the concept of what ‘half’ is in a practical, systematic way using numbers under 12. Learners draw a line from each piece of fruit to the plate/s below until all pieces of fruit have been allocated to a plate. Where the number of pieces of fruit on the plates is the same that number can be split in ‘half’ and where the number of pieces of fruit on the plates is not the same - these numbers can not be split in half. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children and pupils in years one as well as older students needing additional support with their learning. Resource layout Learners draw a line from each fruit/veg to each ‘plate’ pictured below to systematically share out the total number of items (fruit/veg) each time until all have been shared (or not!) Where the total number is ‘even’ (and the fruit/veg can be shared out equally) the learner can write the number of fruit/veg on one plate (the ‘half’ amount) on the line underneath at the end of the question (e.g.) Half of 2 is …4. For the even numbers (which can successfully be split equally into half!) the learner can ‘circle’ the green ‘tick’ displayed, for the odd numbers (which cannot be shared equally into half!) the learner can ‘circle’ the red ‘cross’ displayed before moving on to the next question. At the end of the second sheet there are x12 matching questions about each individual number to recap on which of the numbers between 1 and 12 can/cannot be split equally into half. The colour of the box around each question correlates to the colour of the question completed above guiding the learner more clearly (visually) back to each question box above to check their finding if needed. Recommendations Small objects can be placed on top of each fruit/veg (I have successfully used small coloured matchsticks with this resource if these are not deemed a choking hazard for little learner/s). Once the correct number of matchsticks/items have been counted out onto each individual fruit/veg (above the plates) these can then be physically moved (again, as the learner says “One for you, one for me†out loud each time) to one of the plates. Important message… ANY issues with any of this please don’t hesitate to let us know - we are happy to make changes.

New online service coming soon with FREE downloads (including this resource) available! For more information visit https://alphabetlearning.online What’s included? This download includes two A4, portrait sheets, pdf format. What’s it for? These resources are to practise counting up to x10 items (fruit), writing the total number of each group of fruit then recording ’one more’ OR ‘one less’ for each by either crossing out a piece of fruit (to find one less) or drawing an additional piece of fruit (to find ‘one more’). Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for children in the early years, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support. How to use this resource? The sheet is organised into five different coloured (fruit) groups, each group has less than 10 objects (fruit) in total. Learners count the number of pieces of fruit in each group in turn then write the total amount of fruit in the box (in the centre). For 'One less fruit’ Once learners have counted and written the total number of pieces of fruit in the centre box, learners can then cross off one of the pieces of fruit for each group to make clear what ‘one less’ is before writing the total in the second box (on the right). For 'One more fruit’ Once learners have counted and written the total number of pieces of fruit in the centre box, learners can then draw ‘one more’ fruit for each group (a small amount of space is available for this) to make clear what ‘one more’ is before writing the total in the second box (on the right). There is a clear space to record the number date at the top right of the sheet and for learners to write their name (lower left). Learners cut/position and stick the numbers onto the clock face. Page 2 also includes a minute and hour hand with the challenge to position these on the completed clock face to show ‘3 o’clock’. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years and pupils in years one and two. This resource is also ideal for older learners with additional learning needs. Resource layout Simple (visual) instructions of what to do are included on both pages. Page 1 Learners will need a pencil (to write their name and number date), scissors and a glue stick + The clock face has line indications of where the clock numbers should be placed (but not the order) The (clock) numbers (to 12) are positioned below the clock face - ready to cut out - dotted lines guide cutting Page 2 At the top of page 2 is an ‘extension question’ - which involves cutting out the ‘hour’ and ‘minute’ hands and placing these on the completed clock face to show ‘3 o’clock’. The answers (a completed clock face - with hands displaying the time as 3 o’clock) are displayed at the end of page 2 for learners to self-check how they got on. Recommendations This PDF have been designed to print and use as practical cut/stick resource. The sheets could be printed onto card and a split pin used to make an individual clock for each learner to move the hands and tell the time with. This resource could also be laminated and once cut out the numbers could have velcro-style dots attached to the back (and on clock face) to enable reuse and improve durability. New online service coming soon with FREE downloads (including this resource) available! For more information visit https://alphabetlearning.online What’s included? x5 pages, landscape orientation, pdf format. What’s it for? This resource has been designed to investigate the concept of ‘BIG’ and ‘small’ and explore vocabulary linked to this concept. The images included (as they are presented) don’t necessarily reflect whether (in the real world) the item is bigger/smaller than another. For example the yellow teacup (page 5) appears ‘bigger’ than the tree (also page 5) whereas in ‘real life’ this is not the case. Learners need to make well thought through choices when selecting pairs of images which are bigger/smaller than each other and be able to explain their reasoning! Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years aged children. Resource Details Page 1 Using page 1 through an adult led discussion learners could explore what the concept ‘big ‘ and ‘small’ means. There are x10 pairs of images featured on page 1 which are big/small when compared in the ‘real world’. Learners could first identify which is the big/small item in each pair. There are x10 pairs of images, which are big/small (when compared in the ‘real world’). Learners could first identify which is the big/small item in each pair. is a visual reference sheet which could be used for display purposes but has been designed to be used as a point of discussion about what ‘BIG’ and ‘small’ means could also be used as a ‘front cover’ to create an ‘activity booklet’ if attached to pages 2, 3 and 6 (once complete) with each learners name clearly displayed on the front of the page (in the space provided) also works as an ‘answer sheet’ as images featured in the activity are displayed here in pairs for learners to check with Answers These are a guide for one way the items could be paired when thinking about these items in the ‘real world’. New online service coming soon with FREE downloads (including this resource) available! For more information visit https://alphabetlearning.online What’s included? This download includes x2 pages, portrait orientation, pdf format. What’s it for? This 3D shape wordsearch includes 3D shape names and related vocabulary with images of the shapes included (page 1). The answers (page 2) clearly show where all words are hidden, including their direction and how many words there are to find, with a hidden bonus word for learners to think about to find. Who’s it for? This simple, clear resource has been carefully designed to encourage young learners, especially pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Pupils with EAL (English as an additional language) are supported by the images of the 3D shapes. Resource layout The word search letters are arranged in a x10 by x10 square grid The 3D shape names (and related words) have been organised into four groups of four, clearly showing all hidden ‘shape words’ below the word search. There are x16 words to find in total. These words are hidden horizontally (backwards not forwards), vertically (up as well as down) and diagonally. The direction of the hidden words is made clear at the top of page 1. Once learners have completed the wordsearch they could cross-check their answers independently - promoting autonomy. Words to find are: base face edge flat curved round sphere cone cube cuboid prism cylinder pyramid straight vertex hemisphere Recommendations We recommend that learners use a ‘highlighter’ style pen when finding the hidden words, enabling all letters to remain visible once each word has been identified. Some letters have been used more than once (for different words) so all letters need to remain visible in order to find all of the hidden words. If words are ‘crossed out’ this makes the letters harder to read and identify. This word search may be printed and laminated to be reused. New online service coming soon with FREE downloads (including this resource) available! For more information visit https://alphabetlearning.online What’s included? This download includes x2 A4 pages, portrait orientation, pdf format. These resources have been designed to use together. What’s it for? This resource is an Easter themed ‘hands on’ way to explore and consolidate knowledge of number bonds to 5. Each egg (page 1) once assembled displays the correct number bond on the reverse encouraging learners to be autonomous while they work. Page 2 provides a space to record and check the number bond pairs. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years and pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource details An adult will need to prepare this resource prior to use. This resource needs: plain A4 white card to print on (one sheet per set) scissors a glue stick paper scorer ruler Tip! Prior to folding the eggs it is advisable to use a round metal (ball-head) ‘paper scorer’ and a ruler to draw a scored line (where indicated in the centre of each egg pair) to make folding quicker, easier and more accurate. How to use it Pages 1 and 2 Print both sheets onto card (paper would be too flimsy for intended use) and follow the instructions included. Page 1 Once Easter eggs have been cut out and assembled, shuffle and place on a table top for learners to match - make sure all eggs have the same colour facing up to begin. Learners then match each number bond pair e.g. ‘5’ with ‘0’. If a learner is unsure which number e.g. ‘5’ should be matched with they can turn over the number ‘5’ egg (that they are holding) to look for the answer displayed on the back of the egg. This encourages learners to be autonomous when working, enabling them to do this activity on their own. Page 2 Once learners have matched the number bonds to 5 Easter eggs into pairs they place these onto the egg outline shapes, displayed on page 2. Learners then write the number bonds onto the egg outlines (on the horizontal line provided) and for each egg number written they colour/tick this number of tiny Easter egg outline shapes above for both eggs. This enables learners to check that each pair of Easter eggs (together) makes 5. A ‘Number bonds to 5 checker’ is included at the base of the sheet to support learners in checking each number bond pair together makes 5. A blank space is included in the centre of each egg shape for the numerals 1 - 5 to be written if helpful for learners though blank should be fine for the purpose of counting.
