Why scale up shapes on paper when you can do it on the playground! These task cards will get your students scaling up shapes and drawing them on the playground using chalk. These task cards will give your students lots of practise at ratio & proportion and measuring. This resource contains 16 task cards which get more difficult throughout. This foldable activity consists of 2 differentiated cootie catchers (or fortune tellers) for learning or revising converting fractions to decimals. The children must look at the fraction given, convert it to a decimal, and fold back the paper to see if they’re right. It’s a great way to have students review their knowledge and not even realise that they’re learning! They’ll be engaged and excited with this addictive activity (as I am sure you will be too!). This pack contains two Cootie Catchers, each with a second copy included if you would like your students to write the equivalent decimal for each fraction themselves. Playground Battleships is a great way to learn about, or recap finding coordinates on a one quadrant grid. In pairs your class will play a large scale version of Battleships by drawing a grid using chalk and then using natural objects or chalk to keep track of when and where their ships have been hit. The students have been trapped in a magic classroom by a mischievous wizard who has hidden the key to unlock the door in a series of algebraic equations. They must work together to solve the equations and find the key before time runs out! This escape room is a great end to your algebra topic or perfect start to see what they already know! Take the confusion out of algebra wit this fun outdoor activity where the students will simplify and solve differentiated algebraic problems. They will be given a task card containing an equation which will consist of sticks, leaves and numbers. They must first simplify the equation by creating it on the playground using stick, leaves and chalk before writing a possible solution to the algebraic equation underneath. It’s a great lesson to introduce students to solving equations and representing numbers through letters / objects. Who doesn’t love a treasure hunt!? This is a great activity for looking at compass bearings and use as well as instruction writing. For this lesson students will hide some treasure before writing instructions to get from the starting point to the treasure using compass bearings. These conversion pair cards will get your students converting between different units of measure. They can be used in loads of different ways including as an outdoor scavenger hunt. They are sure to give your students tons of practice converting units of measure in a fun and engaging way. Conversions included: Millimeter, centimeter, & meters Milliliter & liter Grams & kilograms Ideas for use: **Game 1: **Hide the cards around your outdoor area and get the students to go on a scavenger hunt to find the matching pairs. **Game 2: **Give each of the children 1 card, get them to walk around and find the other person with the matching card. How quickly can they do it? **Game 3: **In pairs, put all of the cards face down on the table. Take it in turns turning over two cards to try and find a matching pair. These fraction cards will give your students loads of practice at ordering fractions in a fun and practical way. This pack contains three sets of cards. Diff. 1: All of the denominators are the same. Diff. 2: The denominators are different. Diff. 3: The denominators are different and more complicated. These cards can be used as a whole class or in small groups. There are lots of different variations for this activity; we have listed a few that we like to do below. Go outside and give each child a fraction card. Ask them to get into order smallest to biggest as quickly as possible. To make it more challenging, see if they can do it without talking. Scavenger Hunt: Hide the cards around your outdoor space and get them to find the cards and order them as quickly as possible. Small groups. Use these math puzzles for your students to practice multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, and 1,000. The large puzzle pieces are great to be used as a fun outdoor extension or recap activity however the small puzzles can easily be used as a full lesson activity. I have used these to great success over the last few weeks. My children have loved them and are know pros at multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000! This maths pack has 20 differentiated task cards each with a problem involving estimation in outdoors. It will get your class outside applying and improving their estimation and problem solving skills. Along with each card there is a clue card in order to support those children that need a helping hand. How I used them: After having an initial lesson on what estimation is and going through a few basic problems I stuck the cards up in appropriate places outside. In the pairs the children went around the school grounds finding the cards and solving the problems. My class got through about 4 problems each per lesson. This is a great activity to challenge your class and get them enjoying maths!
