This lesson contains: A match up starter to put correct treaty to the correct date. An A3 worksheet (best in A3, works in A4) which is completed throughout each stage. An overview of the growing fears and tensions on the Plains, firstly the fears of the Indians and then the fears of the White settlers. Students have space on their worksheet. A look at the intention behind the Fort Laramie Treaty, including ensuring safe travel for Americans, but also the problems with getting this across to the Indians, such as a lack of translation and the councils not acting for the whole tribe. A task to use the information provided to note down the terms of the Treaty. An activity to determine the consequences of the Treaty on the Indians and on the Americans. An opportunity to practice an exam question for this topic. There is an exemplar to offer further support and guidance and for students to discuss and peer mark. This lesson contains: A starter to infer what the Mormons believed from studying some images on the board. An introduction video into the central beliefs of the Mormons. This helps understand why Christians disliked them. There are some consolidation questions. An activity to stick in a map of the Mormon journey across America and the West. Students annotate what went wrong at each place from the on-board info. This can also be printed and students could do this in groups instead of it being teacher led. An introduction to Salt Lake City today. Students then read and colour code the degree of success that the Mormons achieved. This lesson contains: A starter task to recap previous learning from the course. A YouTube video introducing the gold rush and how it began, followed by some basic comprehension and thinking questions. An activity to study the information provided to complete questions on why people went for gold and how mining towns grew. A larger activity on the consequences of the growth of mining, from effects on Indians, violence, the economy etc. Students use the information provided to complete the mind map worksheet. This double lesson contains: A starter to consider some images of Plains Indians doing a buffalo dance and what we can learn. An introduction into the lives of the Plains Indians. Students can have a copy of the worksheet. This has always been most effective as an A3 organiser. For the tribe structure, this is done on the PPT, teacher led. The importance of horses and buffalo uses the information sheet provided. The Plains Indians beliefs is done by a YouTube video and student take notes in the relevant boxes. Then for attitudes to war, this is a YouTube video and the information sheet in combination. This will spill over from lesson 1 into lesson 2 on this topic. A final activity in which students connect the problems Indians faced on the Plains with the solution they found. A plenary quiz drawing on both lessons of this topic. Lesson One: A starter confirming Harold’s resistance to William’s attacks and using a source to anticipate what kind of man Harold was. An overview of the different soldiers each side had and students use the information provided to note down the advantages of each side. A discussion of the battlefield at Hastings on Senlac Hill. Students label a picture of the layout with the troops on each side and the advantages of Harold’s position. They discuss what strategies both sides could use to win. A video is used (10 mins) that explains the events that took place with some consolidation questions. A final activity to do a true and false plenary. Lesson Two: An introduction with a quote from Marc Morris about William’s victory being due to incredible luck - students will debate this at the end. An on-board animated recap of the battle with some actions and discussion questions along the way. Sources at the end to discuss the final moments of the battle. A task to colour-code the reasons why William won as luck, strategy or William himself. Students then use this to write up why William won using the on-board guidence to argue with Marc morris (that it was luck) or against (pick another factor). This lesson contains: An overview of innoculation before Jenner came along, with questions on each slide for students to write answers in full. An introduction to Edward Jenner first and then students use the information sheets to complete questions about his discover of smallpox and how it worked. A discussion about the impact of the vaccination, and then students use the information to complete an activity about the impact of Jenner, the resistance he faced and the government funding he recieved. If not, skip this. An introduction to the Renaissance and what it means. Images are used to show the advancements in this period and there is a quiz students can do about inventions and art etc. An overview of the Renaissance challenge to the Church and the advancement in medicine and drawing in this time. A task to use information sheet provided to complete a knowledge organsier worksheet to contain the main changes in ideas of the causes of disease. An activity to study the major situation with causes of disease and students colour a test tube to show little or a lot of change since the Medieval era. A plenary activity to consider whether there was much change between the Medieval era. Students can use the information sheet to do this. This lesson contains: An introduction to the ‘open range’ and why the cowboys moved from working on the range rather than performing cattle drives. A task to study the reasons why the cattle drives ended and the role of cowboys declined. Students read the information provided and put the reasons into order of importance. A discussion of the winter of 1886-87 and the consequences of the great ‘die-up’. An opportunity to study the role barbed wire played in the decline of cowboys by studying an exam exemplar and picking out facts and importance words in the answer, then having a go at their own exam question using similar criteria. This is an editable and printable knowledge organiser for the Treaty of Versailles. It is excellent when printed in A3 (and laminated if you can!) or even as A4 and can be used at KS3 level or KS4 GCSE!

This lesson contains: A starter that looks at the family tree and as you click, it confirms why Mary has a claim. You may with to supplement this with your own activity, but I find this is really good at showing how closely Mary and Elizabeth are linked, but need to emphasise using your own dialogue that Mary is Catholic and what impact her taking the throne might have for England. A few slides dealing with the changes taking place in Scotland and the Treaty of Edinburgh. Before looking at Mary, the lesson introduces that Mary is sent to France to live and meanwhile, Scotland undergoes the change of religion and leadership. There is a video and students answer some questions on the Treaty. This sets the scene because Elizabeth is in a good position in Scotland and doesn’t want that to change. An activity to watch a short video and answer questions on Mary’s life’s ups and downs, including her various marriages. This ends with Mary coming to England. A multiple choice sheet is provided or you can set your own questions. As an alternative, you could ask them to do a timeline as the video plays. A discussion about which marriage provided different benefits or detrements to Mary. A main activity to read statements about why Mary posed a threat coming to England. Students colour-code the severity of each statement and make a judgement about the religious risk posed. A final task to study Elizabeth’s choices and the fit the ‘for and against’ statements to the different choices. Students then make their own judgement about what Elizabeth should do based on historian’s ideas that she needed to make the ‘least worst choice’. A plenary exam question if there is time. An overview of Mary and her life using some slides and a YouTube video which summarises her marriages etc. Students complete a multiple choice questionnaire as they go. A discussion of what Elizabeth should do with her cousin when Mary arrived in England in 1568. An information gathering exercise, using info sheets which can be used in groups or as a carousal, so that students can complete info about the 4 major plots/threats and judge each one for how much Mary was to blame.
