Materials: A large grid drawn on a whiteboard or a large piece of paper. Each cell in the grid should contain a matrix. Matrix question cards with problems to solve. Markers or different colored sticky notes for each team. How to play: Setup: Create a grid or “maze” with an entry point and an exit point. Fill each cell with a matrix. Gameplay: Teams take turns drawing a question card. The card might ask them to solve a problem like: Find the sum of two matrices. Calculate the product of two matrices. Find the transpose of a matrix. Move: To move through the maze, the team must correctly solve the problem on their card. The answer to the problem will correspond to one of the matrices in the adjacent cells. Once they find the correct cell, they place their marker on it. Winning: The first team to successfully navigate through the maze from the start to the end wins.

This activity is perfect for Grades 10-11-12 Academic or Applied students (Ontario curriculum: MPM2D, MFM2P), as it builds the core skill of selecting and using the appropriate trig ratio to determine a missing side length. This prepares students for the next step of applying this knowledge to real life applications. This is more fun than a straight boring quiz. There are multiple paths that could be taken, offering some differentiation of ability and student initiative. This activity is a good compliment to my Angle Tangle Spider Web, which focuses on calculating angles. Enjoy! Your opinions and comments are important for me.
