AQA GCSE English Literature Power and Conflict Poetry – Exam Preparation - A Comparative Answer on Seamus Heaney’s ‘Storm on the Island’ and William Wordsworth’s ‘The Prelude (Extract)’.
This presentation is designed to help you prepare your class to answer a GCSE English Literature question on AQA Power and Conflict Poetry. It is NOT intended to teach students the poems themselves – students should already be familiar with the two poems used within. It is designed for you to use later in the school year when the poetry has been fully covered and the students need to learn how to use this knowledge to write the best possible exam answers.
The presentation is entitled ’ Answering AQA Power and Conflict Poetry Questions’: this 36-slide Powerpoint presentation has been carefully designed and created to help you guide your class through each part of the essay writing process. It examines each of the following elements: the AOs and the Mark Scheme, exam timing and weighting, essay structure, how to write an introduction, using ‘rough notes’ for planning, contents of the main body and how to write a conclusion. Most importantly, it features many extracts from a sample exam answer which are annotated to show the importance of using subject terminology, precise and judicious quotes and comparative links.
The resource also includes a student-friendly copy of Assessment Objectives and a helpful set of Teacher’s Instructions.

This set of resources gives you everything you need to teach students how to analyse writers’ use of structure for the English Language GCSE.
It is aimed specifically at AQA students, highlighting the requirements of their Mark Scheme by focusing on ‘whole-text’ structure. However, it will also be extremely helpful in teaching non-AQA students the basics of structure.
This group of resources has been several years in the making and I feel confident that it will become an essential part of your English Language exam preparation.
Pacing obviously depends on your class, but I would estimate that there is at least eight hours of work included here.
The contents are as follows:
Four PDF presentations, ranging from 34 to 42 slides. Each presentation examines one extract in depth, showing students exactly how to write a comprehensive response to a Structure Analysis question. They include a focus on either four or five structural features, with a model answer paragraph on each aspect. They also feature an in-depth examination of the AQA Mark Scheme for the Structure Analysis questions, showing students exactly how to maximise their marks.
Student Extract Booklets – these two booklets are differentiated: Booklet 2 is for less able students and contains hints as to what structural features are used in each extract. Booklet 1 is for more able students and features the extract without any helpful hints.
Sample Answer Booklet – this contains the full completed sample answer for each extract. It is very useful for asking students to identify the various aspects of the answer.
Structural Techniques Grid – this allows students to record information and examples of the various structural features discussed in the four extracts. It is ideal for homework or revision.
I hope these resources are helpful for you and instructive for your students – as always, I’d be delighted to hear any feedback you may have.
